james curl Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Recently I needed shoulder sugery to repair two torn tendons on my rotator cuff and before they would operate I had to have a stress test, electrogram, and a sonoragram of my heart. I suffered a heart attack the week after I turned 49, am now 73. Was very pleased to pass all test with flying colors, The Doctor could not find any damage from the heart attack when I was 49. Now I just need to get the use my right arm back. My P-15 is just sitting in the driveway waiting my return in 10 more weeks, might have to see about power steering. Do not know how one could get room to run double bottom pulley without modifying the front crossmember, just enough room to install the wide fan belt. Is there another power steering box that could be adapted to the frame and use the original pitman arm? How could you fit a double pulley on the water pump and get everything to line up? Could one weld an identical size pulley to the water pump pulley without warping both pulleys? Too many questions, has anyone seen this done or done it themselves? I could use any help I can get, do not want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already done it. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 James what about the early style that runs the pump off the back of the generator? Quote
greg g Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 The other option is to look through wrecking yards to see if you can find an electric unit. Would need to be converted to 12 v, but I believe the smaller cars from nissan, honda and toyota recently have changed over to an electir pump for powere steering. Might be worth a look to see if they could be adapted to use. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 electric unit of today is a costly conversion at last time I looked into what was available...but then all will involve cost and modifications...to think the early units are worthwhile investment is not a good approach..there were inadequate at the time though workable compared to having nothing...the labor and cost would not be wisely spent in my opinion... there is very little you can do in this area that willnot pernamently alter the vehicle and though some approaces make returning to stock doable..it is not at the expense of some replacement parts to repair for those modified. james curl Posted October 23, 2009 Author Report Posted October 23, 2009 I can see that by moving the radiator to the front of the bracket you could pick up enough space to run a double pulley on the water pump by spacing the fan foward the same distance of the second pulley. You might be able to hang the pump below the intake & exhaust manifold and above the fuel pump. That still leaves the question of what power steering box could be adapted to the frame and still use the stock pitman arm. Quote
p24-1953 Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 why not find one from a 54 and adapt it to fit? does anyone have any photos of the 54 set up? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 why not find one from a 54 and adapt it to fit? does anyone have any photos of the 54 set up? Here is a pic of a 52 Chrysler PS generator and attached pump assembly. Plymouth is the same except a tad bit smaller. I took one off a 54 plymouth a long time ago. I'm going to have to see if I still have it! Bob Quote
