rolliejoe Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Which paint is correct, gloss, semi gloss, satin? Quote
Bingster Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Eastwood has black "under hood" paint which is a lower sheen black. I don't know what exactly was factory but I do know that dirt does not adhere as well to gloss. Cleaning should therefore be somewhat easier for a car that is going to get driven and not be for show. I'm using gloss black under the hood as well as inside fender wells, generator, etc. Quote
Frank Blackstone Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 My electrical automotive expert says alternators and generator get hotter if painted black. He does not recommend painting them black. The original color was silver I believe. Quote
steveplym Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Mine are all painted black with the straps painted silver. Haven't had any troubles. Quote
Don Jordan Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 That is interesting because when I had my generator rebuilt the guy painted the case black. I don't recall seeing them any other color. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 Look Here in the Referance Area of this site. Go about half way down the page and you will find, Additional Plymouth Paint Information (Dodge is believed to be similar) Dennis:rolleyes: http://www40.addr.com/~merc583/mopar/framesets/referenceframeset.html Quote
Frank Elder Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 The generator will not get any hotter painted black than silver, the underhood temperature is a constant. The heat from engine won't "cook" your genny unless it is poorly maintained. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 I can't recall seeing any other color than black....unless repainted by an owner with poor taste. Quote
randroid Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 rolliejoe, I don't have anything more to add to this than those who are wiser than me and who have already responded, so in my usual state of good judgment I'll add my 2¢. The finest mechanic I've ever known once told me that if I feel the urge to paint anything on the engine I should paint it any color other than black. The reason for this is that black disguises oil leaks and you may not know you have one before it gets bad. I've used this rule of thumb since and don't regret it. -Randy Quote
Captain Neon Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 I'm not a very good painter so I repaint accessories with hammertone black. Engines, manifolds, and the tranny on P15s are supposed to be silver. Any leaks are evident. I'd never paint an engine or other fluid-carrying part a dark colour either. Quote
Frank M. Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 The P-15 Tech Guide as mentioned above very clearly states the proper colors that the cars rolled out of the factory with. Regardless of info by mechanics or others, thats what they were. If you want to change it--OK its your car--but Im sure the factory took into consideration the effects of the colors they chose to use. What else can be said about it? Frank M. Quote
47chrysler Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 being a okie I am going for a OSU glossie orange on all my accessories. that way when you open up the hood you can see whats there Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 You can put an OSU sticker on your air cleaner........... Quote
Captain Neon Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 Lots of good places to put an OSU sticker under the hood of a P15. Bob, you've given me an idea. Quote
1949P17BC Posted August 14, 2009 Report Posted August 14, 2009 A little extra heat won't make a differnce Quote
