47chrysler Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 have decided to go with a v-8 in my 47 chrysler. I have access to both a 318 police car motor or a 360 out of a motorhome they both come with a 727 transmission. is one better that the other? Quote
greg g Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 The 318 is as relaible as a rock, and gets better fuel mileage. Quote
buds truck Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 if you are anywhere close to where I live, I'll take the engine and trans you don't use off your hands....... Bud Quote
48Dodger Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 Unless you're planning on testing the rubber on every Saturday night cruise, you won't really feel the difference between a 318 or 360. Depending on where you put the powerband, off idle, or low-end torque, is easily executed by a 318. A 318 with 360 heads, a 4 bbl, and a good cam is nice too. Motorhome blocks usally have extra side wall ribbing, etc.. which makes'em heavier, and isn't really needed for a daily driver pasenger vehicle. The cop motor has probably seen some rough miles and I'm betting will need a close look for cracks. If it checks out, it should be a good starting point. 48D Quote
47chrysler Posted August 4, 2009 Author Report Posted August 4, 2009 sorry but I am saving it for my next T bucket build Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 if you need torque..go with the 360 and build it back to stock specs..if just to make a bit of noise and move about in a spirited manner..the 318 is more than ample in police configuration..DO keep the split duration cam if you rebuild the cop motor..(original 340 profile) the RV has a good duration for low end power and will melt a bit of rubber if you wanted..however built to E58 specs it is one nice combination... 4852dodge Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 The 360 is more then likely has a lot less miles on it than the police motor. either will work fine. The RV tranny will be beefier than the other. Just keep the engine and trannys together, don't swap them. The 318 is internally ballanced but the 360 is externally. The 360 convertor has balance weights the 318 doesn't. Quote

I don't think you understand the police upgrades, they have more done to them than the rv does. and the service that has been done to them is gonna be a lot better than on a rv also. the left motor mount is farther back on a 360 than a 318. use the 318 with 65-69 A body manifolds and it will be a real easy conversion, you may have to cleaance the trans tunnel for the 727 to fit as they are bigger than a 904. don't forget the rearend will need to be swaped also.
