Plymouthy Adams Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 every year we make strawberry preserves for my dad..tonight I cooked off just a tad over 4 gallons..3 1/2 gallon for him in quart containers..I kept 3 pint jars and three 1/2 pints for the house and visiting celebrities..I got the easy part of cooking..Sal does the prep and cleaning...she does not like the boiling mix or boiling the canning jars... Plymouthy Adams Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 they sure had some very pretty rhubarb on the market today...now a rhubarb upside down cake would surely be a treat...I have nver mixed rhubarb with my strawberries..though there are those that do..and I will not get any raves here but I never mix peanut butter and jelly of any kind... randroid Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Tim, That was a very kind and thoughtful thing you did for your Dad. I don't know how long the tradition has lasted but I'll bet the day you make preserves as a high point in his life, and if it hasn't yet achieved that with you I'm sure it will. Way to go, sir. -Randy Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted June 27, 2009 Author Report Posted June 27, 2009 My wife had never seen or done any canning before she met up with me...I admit I don't do like we did growing up but she has learned to make pickles, gardenira, jams and jellies, and process pickled corn (about 4 week process) and prep fruits and veggies for the freezer. She also knows that when I speak of plum and blackberies that means we off to the woods to pick our own fruit from the wild..growing up where I did this was not tradition but more a necessity..the cellars stayed full of home grown food and of course the potato bins were filled to over running to get you through to spring planting..fun time had by all... Orchard Supply Hardware here in Silicon Valley has the jars, lids and paraffin wax. OSH started in San Jose but I know that they have locations in the LA area and might have one the high desert area. OSH started in San Jose but I know that they have locations in the LA area and might have one the high desert area. Having lived in California I am familiar with Orchard Supply Hardware. In one of my favorite movies CITY HALL (staring Al Pacino and others, supposedly filmed in and about New York City) one of the characters mentions stopping by OSH to pick something up. Obviously the editors of this film did not realize that OSH was a California only company. Quote
