47heaven Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Ok....I'm at a stand still on what to do next with the car. The list below is what I have to do. I have an idea on what order to do things, but maybe you guys can give me an idea in what order you would do it. (these are not in order) * Paint and body * Interior * wiring * Floor rust repair * replace drive shaft (it works, but is off balance) * split manifold Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 If you wish to drive your car..and maybe so at night..wiring is a upgrade that will be of first vlaue for you..prior to any interior work..I recommend the repair of the flooring..if heavy body work is needed I also recommend that prior to interior..you may paint before or after interior work..however keep in mind that threshholds and jambs may take a lick during iinterior work and..removal of panels and such prior to paint gives the car a smoothness in the overall looks that cannot be accomplished with interior in place. Driveshaft..how much vibration and can you live with it. Vibration is a bit rough on things. Split manifold...if that is a high mark on your particualar list..also prior to paint to eliminate any possible "slips" when removal and installation time comes around. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 Here's my order so far. Rebuilt engine and while it was apart painted firewall and all inner fender insides of grill fenders etc. I also patched the 1 hole in the floor. My car came with reupholstered seats so I have those installed but dont have the rest of the interior in. Next will be wiring and then the exterior rust repair and paint. Then the headliner and door panels etc. The manifold split isnt on my list for this car but I'd do that last unless you really find it a priority. Quote
D25_Steve Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 1) Drive shaft 2) Manifold 3) Electrical 4) Body work 5) Floor repairs (remove interior) 6) Paint 7) Interior Quote
47heaven Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 Thanks, guys! This helps a lot, but I had to move the drive shaft to the top of the list today because it's really viborating something awful. I'm having a more, modern drive shaft put in with better U-joints because I heard that many drive line guys don't like to mess with the pins and stuff in the old one...in other words, they are a pain in the butt. It's going to cost me about $550, but I will have a better ride. I guess I will go ahead and do electrical after that because I do need directional signals and a horn. Quote
thedahmer Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 $550 is a lot for a drive shaft- I have a split drive shaft from a limo that you can use for parts if you like- you pay for shipping and i will send it asap- Quote
47heaven Posted January 17, 2007 Author Report Posted January 17, 2007 $550 is a lot for a drive shaft- I have a split drive shaft from a limo that you can use for parts if you like- you pay for shipping and i will send it asap- That would be great and thanks for the offer, but once again I have no way to make the drive shaft from the parts. I have no garage and this place is good and local, even though they aren't cheap. They do a lot of off road, hot rod and custom vehicles. I know it's expensive, but it's already half paid for. Quote
JohnS48plm Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 That driveshaft sounds pricey. A guy I know with a 47 sedan had a driveshaft with modern u-joints made in Kalamazoo for $300. I think you could probably shop around and find it a little cheaper. Quote
Allan Faust Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 I would do floor rust, wiring, paint, interior, then a toss up shaft/manifold.Would be the logical order to me. I'd just switch the wiring and paint.... paint first, put anything that could be "ruined" or "uglied" after the paint is in... the rest I agree with completly Allan Quote
vanbuskirk Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 All new. Cylinders. Shoes. Lines. Bob Quote
RobertKB Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 I agree with Allan as to order - floor rust, paint, wiring, interior, then a toss up shaft/manifold. Definitely check out the brakes as well. The original set-up works well if properly adjusted. If the car has sat a long time I would pretty much replace everything as mentioned in another post. Incidentally, when I painted my '38 Chrysler I had already painted around the door jambs and windows. I had the interior and windows in the car and then did the finally paint. I would never do it this way again. Strip the body out and paint it and then do everything else including wiring. Quote
