Ok a little about my situation. I was given a 49 Dodge for my birthday, this car has been in my wife's family since the early 80's it was given to Her grandmother and it was in her front yard when another Dodge enthusiast aproched her about buying the car. She did not want to sell but the guy gave her some information on the car. Now I have the car (will be picking it up next week end) and I am tryign to find anythign I can on it but I can not. I want to know if the guy was pulling her leg or not. From what he said it is a rare car I do not car if it is or not I want to get it rolling again to take My grand ma for a ride.

The guy said it is one of 350 built test run in 1949, They are telling me it is called a Dodge Sport coupe. The last time the family seen any thing on another car like this one was a Car show in Sudbury Ontario and they said the one that they had (on the tv) was one of 2 they had know about the other was in Northern Ontario we believe they were talking about the one I have. Can any one help me out??

Or is it one of the early 49's that were a carry over of the 48 model. Couple things to look for are the engine number and the serial number.

The engine number will be on the drivers side of the block just below the cylinder head in the area above the generator. I believe the later model 49 should have a number that starts with D26 followed by 5 or 6 numbers.

The serial number should be on a riveted on plate on the cowl front door pillar.

The cars registration paper work should contain one of these numbers. some states used engine numbers, some the serial number. The serial number will tell you where and when the car was built. The engine may have been changed over the years so it may not be indicaive of anything except it origin.

How about this one...This is my 1950 Dodge Wayfarer (D33)

1949 would be very similar.

Look here for 1949 models http://www.allpar.com/history/dodge/1949.html

Here's more about the 1950 model.

1950 Dodge Wayfarer

For 1950, Dodge did what you or I would do in the face of success: They just kept buggering on with the 1950 Dodge Wayfarer. A modest front end lobotomy produced a new grille of horizontal bars encompassing the parking lights and placing the Dodge coat of arms on a square chrome plaque in the middle.

The three Wayfarer models came back, all now wearing the big fender-mounted taillights of the senior Dodge models and an extra chrome strip on their rear fenders. Since the roadster -- now dubbed the Sportabout -- had become a genuine roll-up-windows convertible in mid-1949 yet still cost only $1,727, it was now promoted as "the lowest-priced full-size completely convertible open car."

The revised Sportabout, "favorite of all youthful America," according to Dodge brochures, looked a better buy than ever. "Heed the call of the open road in the sportiest car on the highway," they coaxed. "The durable fabric top on its lightweight aluminum frame can be raised or lowered quickly and easily with one hand... [C]hrome-trimmed safety glass side windows that roll up completely with one-and-one half turns give a completely weatherproof car... You'll enjoy the relaxing comfort of the extra wide, soft-cushioned knee-level seat with legroom to spare... the festive playtime look of bright interior fittings and colorful [artificial] textile leather upholstery. Out on the road, you'll thrill to the eager responsiveness of the big 103 horsepower Dodge 'Get-Away' Engine..."

No ad writer's perfect, but this excerpt from the special 1950 Wayfarer brochure shows what Dodge was selling, and, on paper, stood to sell well.

If it is a convertible, with roll up windows and 1949 VIN number, it could be considered "rare" and Sportabout is almost like "Sport Coupe". Maybe the guy was confused.
