jd52cranbrook Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Don-I see your point, but at the same time I don't, a here's why: In my opinion, sniper ware is a form of cheating. Like you said...why should the guy that didn't do his homework on Ebay for an item be given the benefit of having someone do his work for him? Makes sense, but on the other hand, why have a sniper service do the bidding for you when you should be at the computer fighting it out at the last minute like the rest of us do. If there is an item I want, I'm going to try my best to win in this last few seconds or if I can't be there, I will set the highest price I'm willing to pay and hope for the best. That's just how it goes. I'm sure others on here might agree with me, but will chose to stay out of it. Sorry if it doesn't sit right with you, but your way of thinking on this issue seems a little greedy to me and somewhat self-centered. Well said, I agree. edited. Quote
greg g Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 HMMMMM just did an e ay search for dodge 1940-1959 dodge truck parts retruned about 15 pages of items, 80 percent of which were buy it now, no bid listings. Just and observation. Last time this topic came up we kind of defaulted to if you find something you think might be of interest to someone on the forum, e mail them the listing. As far as comparitive neighborliness of the constituents, until this recent bit of peavishnish, I couldn't tell the two apart. So I for one will not be taking my toys and going home. Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Just because you use a sniper tool does not insure you will win. if someone has put say a 350.00 bid on something and it is sitting at 75.00 and no one else bids on it and you set your sniper to 250.00 and set it to go off at 3 sec before the end you will lose. so don't think they always win with them. the sniper is the same as sitting and waiting for the last few sec and hitting the button. Plymouthy Adams Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 in theory you are right..however with the sniper bid tool..you judge the value of the part..enter your high bid days in advance and go off about your business...as you have set your limit..there is no bidding war for you..you get it or you lose it..and there is no baby sitting the computer...I have not entered a direct bid on the bay in years...except a buy it now... but to bid days out...watch and bid again and again and again...still days out..plain stupid...it is this mentality that e-bay likes to suck you into same as a live auction where the mind set is that 'no way is that other guy going to get this" a live auction is pure T entertainment...and filled with buyer remorse when the gavel comes down... Don Coatney Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Don-I see your point, but at the same time I don't, and here's why: Of course, if I see an item on Ebay that I really want, naturally I'm going to keep it to myself the best I can. Again, if I see an item that I feel will benefit people on here, I don't see the harm in posting it. How am I to know that you have your eye on it? Ebay is an open market to the world. In my opinion, sniper ware is a form of cheating. Like you said...why should the guy that didn't do his homework on Ebay for an item be given the benefit of having someone do his work for him? Makes sense, but on the other hand, why have a sniper service do the bidding for you when you should be at the computer fighting it out at the last minute like the rest of us do. Sorry if it doesn't sit right with you, but your way of thinking on this issue seems a little greedy to me and somewhat self-centered. You are 100% correct. When I can buy for less I am a little greedy and self-centered. You can duke it out in the last few minutes of an auction if you want to. But I will set my sniper ware to place my bid in the last 3 seconds while I am away from my puter. Is that cheating? I dont think so. Do you do a lot of e-bay buying and selling? What is your e-bay handle? I go by donnlisa on the bay. But I have not bought anything or sold anything there for a long time. Quote
dezeldoc Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 you are not missing anything Don, the seller fees now are a joke! I am just buying when I can get a deal and that is about it. Quote
Normspeed Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I used to post the occasional ebay item here to share with the gang, but here's why I stopped...Tim and Don! Just kidding, but here's another view...Some of the best deals I've found on the bay are incorrectly listed due to spelling errors, wrong year or model in description. Those are sometimes real finds and I would hate to rain on someone else's parade by posting something like that when the auction is still active. I will however send a PM to someone I know is looking for that part as long as I'm not going to bid. Don C, don't get me started about snipers!!!!!!!! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 If you know of a person who asked you to try and find..then by all means a PM is in order..it is the general public at large that needs not inofrmed..not actively looking for themselves..not deserving of the tipoff.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Don C, don't get me started about snipers!!!!!!!! Normspeed; Did you use the sniper link I sent you at your request? If so how did it work? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I've used the auction sniper service two or three times. It seemed to do it's job. I don't know how really critical it was when used in the bidding on the items in question. I'm sure it helped. Bud.......don't feel too bad........I forgot and posted some current auction item not long ago. And got the same responses you got. I look for stuff on ebay on a fairly ongoing basis. I like it better when nobody is bidding against me.......just like the sheet metal manual I got a few days ago for the opening bid of $19.99 plus shipping. Had it been posted here or elsewhere, someone may have bid on it also. So, it was a fairly good bargain as manuals go. That's their point. Quote
Normspeed Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Don, I did use the software, and it immediately improved my wins. Mainly because I could set it and forget it. I've missed some good deals in the past because I simply wasn't online when the auction ended, and the item got no bids. In those cases, I've had great success in contacting the seller about relisting. I did that just today and picked up some nice vintage lights for a good price on the relisting. Quote
James_Douglas Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I think that this thread is a little silly. Anyone can use one of a many software services to do keyword searches on ebay and email the results to yourself every morning. I use powersnipe and it tells me when anything I am interested in for my Desoto is available. Given these tools availability...posting auctions here is only for people that don't know what they are doing ebay wise and they are not the real price competition. Best, James Quote
David Maxwell Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 ...just to help diffuse this situation a bit..., a man contacted me today with an OD for sale. Says it's from an early 50's Plymouth. He doesn't know what it's worth and wondered if I was interested. As much as I would like to have an OD, I'm not in the market for one now and not interested in tearing my current tranny out. So, I suggested he post info about the item here. I don't think he is planning on ebay. I hope this current thread doesn't scare him off. NOTE: I do not know him. Have not seen the OD. Have no idea what's it's worth. Will not be making an offer on it. Best of luck to all of you seeking one. Quote
