Jim Shepard Posted October 27, 2008 Report Posted October 27, 2008 Can someone post a photo of the valve spring compressor used on our flatties? Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 This one was on ebay last week. Quote
Jim Shepard Posted October 28, 2008 Author Report Posted October 28, 2008 Thanks guys. Now I'll just have to find one... Quote
greg g Posted October 28, 2008 Report Posted October 28, 2008 The "C" clamp types works also. OR Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I have one like this. It came with two set of jaws. Used it on both side and over head valve set ups. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 The "C" clamp types works also. How can the "C" clamp valve spring compressor work on a flathead engine? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I used a similar "C" clamp type spring compressor. Don, they work the same way as it would on an over head valve engine. With the head removed, set one end on the valve head and the other end around the valve spring keeper, flip the handle to compress the spring, remove the keeper locks, release the handle, and remove the tool. The one I used is a larger one, used on large diesel engines, but it still worked on my flattie. A smaller automotive one may have been easier, as the large one was a bit cumbersome at times. Don Coatney Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Merle; Take a close look at the one I pictured below. It will not work on a flathead. This one pictured below will work on a flathead. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Yes, you are correct there. The first type wouldn't work. The one I used was more like the second one. Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Any of you guys use the other little tool that holds the valve keepers in place while you push them onto the valve? Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Any of you guys use the other little tool that holds the valve keepers in place while you push them onto the valve? The keeper positioning tool I use is called grease. 1 Quote
Young Ed Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Don thats no fun. Dad has a device kinda looks like a clothespin that holds them. Its spring loaded and you just push it against the valve stem and the keepers are in place. Works slick! Quote

Young Ed Posted October 30, 2008 Report Posted October 30, 2008 But with grease you still have to get them in place by hand. I dont know about you but I have fat fingers for doing stuff like that. Quote
