Frank Elder
Lovely wife of mine can not seem to master the ABC'S of shifting a 3 on the tree. She has a desoto 46 coupe, and if it is to be altered to a slushbox, a powerflite push button would be awesome! Is there a plate that has been manufactured? AOD518? with aftermarket buttons? Thoughts on this.....FIRST GEAR FRANKIE
Plymouthy Adams
Charlie Akers (olddaddy) on this forum is currently working on a flathead 6 to late model 3 speed Torqueflite...not sure just where he is with it right now...PM to him may get current progress report...and of course the Powerflite 2 speed was hooked up to the 230 six in the Plymouth in 1954 and continued to the demise of the flathead, in the car lineup that is... greg g
Does the Desoto not have fluid drive???? Shouldn't she be able to drive it similarly to an automatic? WilCap does make a plate for Flathead to GM 350 Automatic.
Frank Elder
Sad to say someone had replaced the original with a standard 3-speed. Thats where my extra fluid drive rear bumper came from. Teardrop thread. Esmey wanted brizzo ribbed bumpers, momma gets what momma wants. 55 Fargo
Sad to say someone had replaced the original with a standard 3-speed. Thats where my extra fluid drive rear bumper came from. Teardrop thread. Esmey wanted brizzo ribbed bumpers, momma gets what momma wants. How about getting another fluid drive, and a longer input shaft, then the Mrs can have the simplicity of a 3 spd trans and a bit of break from clutching and shifting. My 47 Chrysler Coupe has a regular clutch and 3 spd trans, I would never switch back, but might switch to a T5 trans at some future point. I have an M5 trans semi-auto trans, and fluid drive in a parts car, come get her, drive north on I 29 cross the border into Canada, then another hours drive...............Fred
Frank Elder
Thanx fred you magnificent, magnaminous, maple flag waving [i better not add maloderous!] man of the hour! Esmey has set her little foot down, she wants a true automatic. ...SIGH!!!! More work for popi, but she's worth it. Besides if we go to canada,eh, she try to make me smuggle home one of those infamous toilets! Fred is one of the reasons this forum is a wonderful thing. BeBop138
Wilcap makes an adapter that will hook up a later GM auto....
Olddaddy
As Tim already stated, you can install a late 50s pushbutton automatic, but it will be a 2spd, and pricey to buy and rebuild. And as also stated Wilcap makes a good adapter for a GM unit. My adapters are very close to being done, but they have been close to being done for a year now. The machine shop does incredible work and I am happy to have them working with me. However, they are involved in considerable drama where women are concerned. This tends to delay things, like adapters. As of now I expect to have a working adapter setup within the month of September. It is a reproduction of an original Chrysler item and will mate up a 727 or it's later 500 series grandchildren to a 230 or similar flathead six. My goal is to sell them at around $350, but that is not determined yet as the machine shop has not finalized their billing to me. I will post pictures when I have them back in my hands. Don Coatney
However, they are involved in considerable drama where women are concerned. Why are your adaptors not available:confused:
Olddaddy
The machinist who is doing the work has had considerable personal issues regarding the female in his life. Short of picking them up and starting over I can only wait on him to get the first run completed. If folks can wait I will have them done within a few weeks, at least that is my current response from the machinist. If anyone is in a hurry there are adapters for the TH350/400 automatics out there.
