  1. I bought some aftermarket rings for mine. You can find used hubcaps on ebay usually. Another place to check is parts vendors. Roberts told me a year ago or so they had some repo's. They were the early 40's hubcaps, but the only difference in them were the Plymouth script looks different. Roberts motor parts http://robertsmotorparts.com I bought my trim rings online for about $10 a piece. They aren't original, but look nice. Dennis Hemmingway linked me to a site where I bought them I just don't remember the site. Wirth's Automotive is another place. http://www.wirthscustomauto.com/
  2. Mine are all painted black with the straps painted silver. Haven't had any troubles.
  3. I'm here. 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe.
  4. Thanks for the input guys. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I've got a friend who will help me with it, but it will have to be later in the year. Just thinking out loud I guess. I'll probably call George Asche at the least. Like you said though Bob from what I hear I better be ready to talk a while.
  5. Marty, since I switched to 12v negative and an alternator that has been the best thing I've done to the car. The electronic ignition helped tremendously. Definitely go the alternator route any day. Some modifications just make sense.
  6. I've been thinking about adding an overdrive to my car. Would make it much nicer to drive on the highway. How much would I be expecting to spend? Where is a good place to find a trans? What kind of modifications if any would I have to do to do the swap on the '47? Will everything work since I went to 12 volt? Thanks for any help you give. I'm just looking for input for my next endeavor.
  7. Not mentioned here yet, but I would check the brakes. If nothing else, but a visible check of the wheel backing plates to see if wheel cyls are leaking or anything else. Don't want to get halfway home and the brakes don't work. My grandpa always said good tires and brakes are a necessity. Doesn't hurt to have a running engine either.
  8. It wouldn't hurt Frank. It will take out any imperfections, even minute ones and set up for a nice final finish. I had a bit of filler work on my car and it does wonders to help smooth it out. I've always had good luck with it.
  9. Sounds like something possibly electrical to me. Have you checked all your connections to the distributor and the coil? You may also want to check that small wire in the distributor. It can get you too. If it started back up I'd drive it a while and see how it goes. I know in the past with intermittent problems I usually have to wait until the engine quits all together before I find out what is wrong.
  10. Congrats to you and your new wife. Here's to making new memories with your Plymouth and your new life together.
  11. Check and make sure yours is wired correctly with this schematic. If I remember correctly there are two wires spliced together that go to the power + on the back of the gauge as it goes to something else, but #1 and #2 should not have any other wires on it, it should be #1 goes back to #1 terminal on sender, and #2 goes back to #2 wire on sender. If you have another wire on #1 or #2 there probably lies your problem.
  12. It might leave you with sticky fingers though....I think I'll leave it at that.
  13. Thanks Norm. I bent them out away from the center of the wheel and that made them looser, then i opened up the "teeth" a bit and pushed them closer to the wheel. Now it is hard to get it on and hard to get off. Wish I would have done this sooner, I wouldn't be looking for another p-15 hubcap. I've got one off a '41-'42, but the Plymouth script is different. It will do for now, oh well more ebay shopping. Yah!
  14. I went to a cruise on Friday night and lost a hubcap again. Same wheel on the right rear, purchased it off of ebay about 6 months ago. Second one I've lost in three years. So my question is can I bend the wire tangs that hold them on to keep it on tighter. I can remove a hubcap by hand on this wheel, it is tight, but isn't tight enough to keep me from removing it by hand. I don't want to lose another hubcap.
  15. Check this thread out Don. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=3029&highlight=Fuel+Gauge I ran a seperate set of wires just to rule out any problems with the wiring. Then I ran a ground wire from under the sending unit mounting bolt to the frame. Haven't had any problems since.
  16. Be sure to check the backspacing as the others have said. I called wheel vintiques and bought a set. Everything was pretty good on them, but the wheels on the front rubbed when I would turn hard. I finally sold the wheels, but the backspacing is key.
  17. You could always go the mechanical switch route. I did that with my car and I'm extremely happy with it. Watson street works has one, there are others available too. http://www.watsons-streetworks.com/brake_switches.html
  18. Like Don said though you can check it with a meter too.
  19. It's a lot of fun to drive these cars. I get to where anymore I just enjoy the drive to the shows and the cruises more than the shows themselves. Being able to get the car out and take it around is really a whole lot of fun.
  20. If I remember correctly Greg if you take a test light and put the connector to positive and then touch each terminal with the solenoid bolted, whichever one it lights on will show you it goes to ground. So you would hook the ignition up to that terminal. That way when you send 12 volts from the starter button it would complete the circuit. I had a relay that neither terminal would complete the circuit to ground and that ended up being a bad solenoid.
  21. Well I got the car all back together this week after the air compressor mishap. I had Monday off and got the left rear door and fender sanded and buffed. Put it back together and the trim clips broke on the door trim. Stopped and ordered a few new ones, got them yesterday and put it back together. Went for a drive, it was about 85 and sunny. Really comfortable to drive the car. It felt great to be back on the road with it after over a month with it unroadworthy. I planned on driving it down to a car show this morning, but woke up to rain showers and thunderstorms. The temperature isn't bad, but it has been raining all day. Hope it stops this evening for at least a chance to cook out some pork chops and down a few beers. Happy 4th to everyone. Hope all stay safe and have fun.
  22. So putting a valve back there to keep water running thru the heater during the summer time is a bad idea?
