  1. Louie, what rack & pinion are you going to install?.....andyd
  2. Louie, its much easier to check for wear with the wheels still on the car.......anyway have you removed the kingpin?...........if not try & wedge a large screwdriver or similar between the stub axle & upright and check for any movement.........andyd
  3. Pete.......nice to hear from you......lol........and you could not have put it better.......1940's drum brakes can be rebuilt, adjusted, adjusted again, and with all brand new perfect parts you willl end up with..............1940's drum brakes, which to be honest stop as well as, well.........1940's Drum brakes could be expected to stop..........I have the stock drums on the 41 Pymouth coupe & 4 wheel vented disc brakes on the 1940 Dodge sedan.........lol..........anyone want to guess which stops the best, which gives a feeling of more security, safety and stopability................lol..............nope.........it ain't the 1940's drum brakes..........but that will change eventually as the Plymouth will get discs..........till then I drive it like a 1940's car...........regards, andyd
  4. Charlie, I thought you were the Publicity Officer of the Wood Plymouth Car Club.............decided to make yourself President now?..............lol..........andyd
  5. Oh..........have never checked.........lol.........andyd
  6. Don, forgive me but I have no idea what you are talking about.......lol.......and rear to curb parking is the norm here in the Clarence Valley, signposted every 80-100 foot, tho' its easy to see the tourists who park nose in.........lol......have also attached another pic showing the main street of Grafton.........more dumped cars......wheres the scrap guy?...........lol......andyd
  7. Thought I'd start another thread, Don C mentioned he hadn't seen angled rear to curb parking......its quite common here in Oz, in fact where I live, Grafton, in the Clarence Valley here in NSW, Oz its the standard thing.........heres pic of some cars in front of my shop, Scale Automobilia/Big River Book Exchange.......yeh, I know theres an old car there in the pic, someone dumped it there, the council didn't come to pick it up & the scappers didn't want it so I took it home..........lol.....andyd
  8. Bill thanks for the answer, Anthony, are you absolutely certain the 318 poly you have has hydraulic lifters?......if so then what sort of rocker setup does it have as all the poly lifters I've seen, admitedly for solid lifter cams, have adjustable rockers.......andyd
  9. The biggest problem these mopar 6's have is high rpm's and Don's 3.55:1 diff would certainly offset the rpm issue, as would his car using a T5 overdrive......my still stock driveline 1941 Plymouth Coupe has a 4:1 diff and even with a tailwind & me leaning forward gently beating the outside of the door with a light whip, at 3000rpm I can hear every piston as it hits TDC ....."once more buddy, once more!!.......and we'll all stick our heads out the side of the block!!" ..............they don't like revs...........at all......lol.........andyd
  10. Bill, thanks for all the info BUT your answer is still rather confusing............what was the last year that the 318 Poly was used in the USA......1966 or 1967?.......and last year the Poly used in Canada?.....1966 or 1967?........as for Australia I know for certain that irrespective of where the Oz Dodge Phoenix were sourced(Canada?) the last year for the 318 Poly in the "Big" mopar, ie the Phoenix, was 1966, the 1967 Dodge Pheonix had the 318 LA Wedge, and as an aside all V8's in Oz Valiants were LA series, 273 in 1964/5 then the 318 from 1967........but I degress........Last year for Polys please and I have never heard of a 318 Poly with hydraulic lifters.......thanks, andyd
  11. Tommy, you're almost his next door neighbour........I'm 12,000 miles away.........lol........and I can almost smell them............yum.......lol........andyd
  12. O/k here in Oz the last use of the 318 poly engine in a car was definately in the 1966 Dodge Phoenix, a 4dr Dodge badged Plymouth( tho' am pretty sure trucks used the 318 poly for a few more years).........however I have heard & read conflicting info regarding the last years that the 318 poly was used in the US & Canada..........question is........what was the last yr that the 318 poly was used in the USA and Canada and to further muddy the waters has anyone got definate info regarding the use of hydraulic lifters in 318 polys......I understood that all 318 polys were solid lifter engines with adjustable rockers.........thanks...Andy Douglas
  13. Shel.......thanks, now I remember, I did read that.......lol.............err what day is it?.........lol.........thanks., andyd
  14. I have owned my 1940 Dodge since September 1971, originally went to buy it as a parts car for the 1940 Dodge Coupe I'd had since May 1970 & pulled apart. When I saw the sedan it had current registration, was complete down to the owners manual & hubcaps but had some burnt out ignition wires........it was advertised for $40.00, when the guy answered the door at the address given he said.." oh man, you mean Sebastian, Sebastian the old car, man"............"err yeh"........"he's round the corner man........"....."err o/k"........we( my dad & I, as I wasn't old enough to have a drivers licence yet) went round the corner, met Sebastian(lol) and went back & offered $15.00.......which the guy accepted.......it cost $20.00 to have sebastian towed home by a tow truck........lol........anyway have attached a pic taken before I bought it of my 1940 Dodge Coupe that was published in an Oz magazine and a pic of the 4dr Sedan that I still own 39yrs later......andyd
  15. Charlie, whether its a phantom or not, Plywood looks great and is a credit to all those involved.......I hadn't noticed pics of it before today and it had me wondering about wether it was a phantom or not, your comments above answered that, but that doesn't detract from it.......btw what hit Plywood in the 1st place?........regards, andyd
  16. Bob, I'd never heard of the Unity brand till it was mentioned on here, Appleton seems to be the brand that old time customs used, even to the extent that aftermarket brand Cal Custom did dummy spots.....Fred, check out the Night Prowlers website, they used to have a few spots.......andyd
  17. Frankie, yep I told him about it but am gunna try & catch up with him this weekend, will get some pics and post them.........andyd
  18. Bob, thanks for the comments, the weird thing is that since the advent of the internet I have had the chance to really see a wide range of 1940 Dodges and compare the differences between the US cars and mine it has only been thru photos & pics.........little things like the way the grille is held into the sheet metal(the US one with screws accessed thru the bars from the front...my Oz grille is held from inside, from behind as it has the Plymouth hood that allows access), the chrome window moldings, the proper Dodge headlight surrounds, overiders, the correct Dodge tailights(I've never seen a set here in Oz) etc.......lots of things to compare.......lol.........andyd
  19. I have had my 1940 Dodge 4Dr Sedan since 1971, over the yrs I have wrecked out another five 1940 Dodges for parts, none of these other cars were even remotely anything other than a parts car. Apart from 2 other 1940 Dodge sedans that I had seen in the 1970's, my car is the only other one I had personally seen..........until today. About 12 mths ago there was a metallic turquoise green/blue 1940 Dodge Coupe on US ebay, it looked to be a nice stocker and had a particular identifying mark.......below the fuel cap a fuel spill had burnt thru the paint resulting in a grey stain that was very distinctive....I had a good look at the various pics on ebay and thought it seemed a good buy. I have a mate who is a very skilled mechanic, working at a local tyre shop.........a few weeks ago he mentions that there is supposed to be a "1940's" Dodge Coupe coming in for a wheel alignment.......and that it has had 2 previous appointments cancelled........"yeh Geoff, sure Geoff"......says I......well this morning I was just making my 1st cup of coffee for the day b4 opening the shop and theres a garbled phone message......."Hey, its me, Geoff, that Dodge is here".....I replayed the tape 4 times b4 it dawned on me who it was......didn't even have a sip outa the coffee cup, closed the front door, got in the van and round to the Tyre shop.................and there it was.......grey fuel stain and all..........the VERY FIRST USA 1940 DODGE I HAVE EVER SEEN..........lol............after 40 years I finally get to see a genuine, real 1940 USA Dodge, and its the very same coupe I'd seen on ebay 12 mths ago........after spending 10 minutes going around it and pointing out all the differences it has compared to my Oz built car to Geoff the owner returned.........what an amazing feeling seeing another 1940 Dodge and finding out it lives about 15kms from me. And yep, its the same car I saw on ebay, ex Arizona no rust, still LHD, the original wheels had been replaced by a set of Cragar SS mags, otherwise its just a nice original stocker..........the owner Leigh has seen my 40 Dodge many times he says outside of the shop and intended to call in once he had got the car registered, which was planned to happen this week, the wheel alignment that Geoff was doing was to that end..........anyway will post a pic of it when I get one.........tho' if anyone kept a pic from when the coupe was on ebay I'd be pleased if you could post it.........o/k..thats my story for today.........I'm a happy camper......lol.....andyd
  20. Bob, hope he likes it........lol.........I had a 24 can carton that I was going to send but took a while to find a box big enough.............while I was looking I had to have the odd ..........and even can.........lol...........till there was none left!!.......so I thought the hanging banner would be the next best thing.........and Cooper's under age anyway..........lol.......regards, andyd
  21. Maybe Plymouth had a pommy engineer working on their car design staff in late 1945.......I would have bet money that a cable wiper wasn't original to mopar but looks like maybe they did have them.........andyd
  22. Marty........can you give more info re the pistons you had made, who,where,what.....lol..and info re the modern rings.......would be very interested in this info........thanks, andyd
  23. From what I understand Turkey was where Mopar had its Middle East Importers/Distributorship based and a lot of NOS is there........I've bought from Moparkenan and found him fine to deal with, the stuff I've got has been all genuine USA boxed parts........andyd
  24. Fred, looks great, when I painted my visor it had the pale green etch primer underneath still, but it was faded & blotchy so I grey primed both top & bottom and just masked the bottom so I didn't get any overspray from the top coats. As the interior upholstery colour is grey when you sit in the car and look out the front the grey primer blends into the interior colour and as its a flat grey there is no glare as per the original........not sure if you can tell in the 1st pic but the 2nd shows the underside of the visor......andyd
  25. Aero, the only 1950 Plymouth kit i have ever heard of was the resin 2 dr sedan that R & R Vacucraft did in the 1990's, I have one myself & it has a 1994 date cast into the inside of the body, it is the body, chassis pan, interior tub, dash, grille 7 uses the AMT 1941 Plymouth Coupe as the donor for an engine etc, but can be built as a curbside, ie, with no engine......you guys in the USA looking for the AMT 41 Plymouth coupe should check with Tom Carter at Spotlight Hobbies or Fred Stearns at Freds Model World, both are great to deal with and offer good deals....or me of course here in sunny Sth Grafton Australia.........lol......andyd
