Need some pics of original type interiors for 46-48 DeSoto

So from Ratbailey's pic, the bottom sample in a light tan would be correct. -

I finally got some samples from ACME car interiors. They do headliners but don't have broadcloth for seats. They have the dimensions for every old American car, so I don't have to measure the ceiling of my car. Their price is $239 for a kit. Which headliner below do you think is closest to original? Marc. -

Thanks again Ratbailey for the extra pics! Maybe a shot of the headliner from a greater distance? Maybe some pics of the kick panels in the front floor area of the front seat. On the headliner samples above, I kind of like the one on the left, E. but I know it is a little too dark. I think SMS has more samples, but they don't show everything on their webpage. -
I was lucky enough to hire an unemployed friend, age 47, to help with my car and house projects. He doesn't know a water pump from a starter motor, but he learns anything involving manual labor very fast! He even helped me remove the body from the chassis on my 48 DeSoto. I made a a wooden cart to put the body on. So easy to work on the chassis without the body in the way! But I was told putting the body back on is the really hard part!

The weight of the 1949 Plymouth Suburban is 3,105 lbs., and the 1950 Suburban weighed 3,155 according to The Plymouth and DeSoto Story, Don Butler, Crestline, 1977.

Yes, my shifter rod might be stuck. Good to know it is probably a splined connection. Maybe a puller would work. I don't thick there is much of a difference mechanically between a 48 and a 49. Thanks, Marc.

Ratbailey, I think I have the kickpanels, but they are not original. Save those kick panel originals, no matter how bad. It will save a future upholsterer a lot of work. Maybe you could even make measurements and trace to make templates. Since you have a Custom model, the heater vents are built in, especially if you have dual heaters. My car only has a heater, ComfortMaster, on the passenger side. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving, and looking forward to more pics from you! -
I've been trying to remove the shifter rod on my 48 DeSoto for weeks now. I removed the shift lever at the top, and removed the nut at the bottom of the shaft, but the rod won't come out. I'm trying to remove it so I can install that gearshift boot around the steering wheel post and the shift rod. Is there some hidden pin at the bottom of the shift rod holding it on?

Need some pics of original type interiors for 46-48 DeSoto

I haven't heard anything about SMS good or bad. Ratbailey, I would also like a pic of the door panel so I can see the whole panel to see what the design looked like. I've seen armrests done both ways, in broadcloth and leatherette. The geometrically designed trunk floor mat looks fine, but I think the original would have been a ribbed black rubber mat. I have a semi retired upholsterer who was recommended to me helping me with my choices. He suggested I get a pre-sewn kit for the headliner from ACME of Long Beach, but they haven't sent me any samples yet. SMS's price for the headliner kit is $339. Marc. -

Thanks Ratbailey for those pics. And you are going to do what i would have asked you to do. Take some pics of the headliner and package shelf! Thanks! I think that A, B, C. D, and E above show some good samples of the vinyl leatherette to choose from. I'm not sure yet what seat cloth I want. but I think only some of the cloth materials are real wool. I think the others are some kind of sythetic cloth. I want real wool for the seat and real brushed cotton for the headliner. -
Sorry, but there will be a quiz! Watch this filmstrip to study up on it. https://mymopar.com/mtsc-1950-volume-3-10-all-in-a-days-work/ Here is another filmstrip that gives some good info on linkages and the semi-auto transmission. https://mymopar.com/mtsc-1951-volume-4-12-transmission-brakes-shock-absorber-tips/

Here are some more samples from SMS showing some cloth material for seats, some vinyl leatherette samples, and a patterned rubber trunk mat. -

I GOT some samples sent by SMS for my 48 DeSoto. these are broadcloth and headliner samples plus a carpet sample. From memory, I'm thinking the E headliner is closest to my car and none of the broadcloth samples are correct, but top one A might work. What are your thoughts? -
Want to start engine on my 48 DeSoto with body off

Bob, I should say in reference to your comment on engine stands, that my engine is installed in the chassis, not on a stand. -

Yes, I've ridden in some Model Ts sitting on milk crates and watching the street go by below. I thought, boy are Model Ts a primitive car! I can just see the reaction of some of the mothers on my street with me driving around a bare chassis without any lights or bumpers just missing their toddlers playing in the street. I better have some good brakes! I didn't know bodies got jealous! -

Thanks for the advice, but I don't wear panty hose. -
I have not wired my car yet, and I want to get the engine started before I put the body back on, just to see how it runs. I know I need to install the water pump, radiator, starter, generator, distributor, coil, fuel pump, fuel tank, and primary and secondary ignition wiring. Do I also need to install the voltage regulator now just to start it?

Yes, on the post war business coupes, the wood panels are fixed and do not open. ARe the above pics from a 41-42 Dodge? I think Dodge was the only make that put pin stripes on wheels, but I could be wrong. -

A friend of mine down in Imperial Beach south of San Diego, bought a 46 DeSoto business coupe just like mine. I asked him if I could come down and take some pics of it. I took some pics of the seat, which was out of the car, since it was original, but shot, upholstery. So these pics, from the early 80's, are invaluable to know how the seat upholstery was done for my car. So any of you can refer to these pics if you are restoring a 1940s MoPar. -
Andy, I agree with everything you just said there. But maybe I'm biased as I am currently restoring a rare 1948 DeSoto three window coupe. Only 1,950 made from 1946-49! Chrysler had not offered a 3-window coupe since the early 30s when they came out with them in the 1941 model year on Dodge, DeSoto, and Chrysler. I often think that since the body builder for Chrysler and Ford was Briggs, that they were following the lead of the 3 window Lincoln Zephyr coupes of 1937-42.
-
You should also have your steering inspected for slop or play.
-
Dodge did make a model more to your liking. The 3 window coupe is rare and desirable to many collectors, but if you don't like it, you could get a club coupe, or a two door sedan. Both have a longer roofs and different rear windows.

excellent work. The rocker panels almost always rust out. They make replacement rockers I've heard.
