  1. It has been book marked - thank you. Perhaps I'll see you at a show.
  2. Life was just easier in the 40s. I remember seeing books my father had. All the mechanics wore blue over coats and their hands were always spotless. I mean how hard can it be? I'm going to find out.
  3. I hate to beat this dead horse into the ground but I have just one more question: I cut the old rubber off. I've ordered new ones. Do I take the end off the drive shaft? I notice in the picture there is a spring - will that go flying? I know I have to clean the U joint then slip the dust cover on and then pack it with grease? I usually do it wrong then do it over. I get more practice that way. I appreciate all the help. The engine is coming out soon. I'll try to get pictures.
  4. I hope this works - I've never sent this type of stuff before. c:\users\owner\appdata\roaming\qualcomm\eudora\attach\Transporters.pps;
  5. So here it is. I like the idea of putting the rubber in hot water. Putting the boot on is going to be a challenge. Still can't find the grease fitting.
  6. How do you find out about these meets BEFORE they occur? Now that my car is road worthy I'd like to take it out and play. While this may sound silly I still get chills when someone says, "Hey, nice car." It's sort of like when they say "Hey, nice dog." I didn't really have much to do with it but the recognition is nice,.
  7. While it was just mentioned (and I hadn't given it any thought) I can't seem to find a zerk fitting on the U joint. How does one go about getting grease to it? I've got some pictures as soon as I figure it out.
  8. done... I'll try to get some pictures. I really don't want them to go to waste. It is not my goal to make money but rather see that the pieces are put to use.
  9. I must be the only true lazy one here. I had all my stainless off while the car was being painted. I thought I would polish it all myself. Never under estimate the power of the pros. I spent so much time on just one piece and was never truly satisfied with look. I took my stuff to a polisher. It was worth the money to save my time and have it look gorgeous. They also removed dings and imperfections. If you're good with the wheel go for it. But a polisher will do it quicker and more efficient. I actually have some extra pieces all polished up that I'm not sure what to with. I can take pictures if you wish. I also had my bumpers re chromed for $300 @. But they do look nice.
  10. I don't think there will be a right or wrong answer - but many opinions. I would like to avoid your mistakes. I am pulling the engine. I have already removed the hood. Will I be able to pull the engine with the transmission on or should I take it off first? It's a 47 2 door sedan. thanks,
  11. Right now I have been unable to locate any leather ones. I guess I will go with Roberts. He seems to have the rubber ones. I believe that getting them on is going to be a problem. The book says to "force" them on. Yikes.
  12. Thank you - thank you. I think I'm going to find some leather ones. Like you said I just cut the rubber ones off. Thank you for not only your advice but for your opinion they were both helpful.
  13. I know this thread is closed but I'm hoping some one still is checking. I got the drive shaft off and did a really stupid thing. I hate to admit to it because now some will have a chance to confirm publicly how inept I am. I pushed the shaft out from under the car and did some other things. When I got out I looked at the shaft and I can't remember which way it goes! How important is that? Should I just have it balanced? Question 2: I'm looking at the service manual and I can't figure out how to get the old dust cover off. It says, "Remove the old dust cover and disassemble the universal joint..." I'm looking at the picture but mine is not just sliding that easily. I will try to take some pictures. Please remember not everyone is as smart as you. My father is rolling over in his grave. He never showed me about mechanics because he was one and he said it's a terrible way to make a living. I had to wait till he was dead to pick up the sport. thanks
  14. I've been looking at the service manual on how to remove the "propeller shaft". Having worked mostly on Chevy's I was startled to see it doesn't have a universal joint that you just unbolt. It's talking about "remove the trunnion pin with special tool C-552 and disassemble the universal joint" All I'm trying to do is get the transmission out. It is a 47 2 door sedan. I don't remember having this problem with my 48. Also where can you get the dust covers. These are rubber - on my other car they are leather. The time for summer projects has begun. Thanks for your help.
  15. I am amazed at how snooty people can be about their cars. A while back I traded a 36 Chevy pick up for a 54 Packard Clipper. I wanted to join the Packard club (pre computers). I was snubbed because I had a Clipper and not a President. How silly is that? I am so pleased with the response I get here. I've got one Plymouth about 95% finished and I'm starting on another. While this group has a few grumpy old men most are just old. Welcome aboard.
  16. I guess I'll kick in my 2 cents: I did my Plymouth front to rear. There was a problem with the tail light. I wrote to them, sent the wire and they had it in the mail in a couple of days. They get my vote.
  17. Thank you - this is next week's project. I think I'm going to wait till I get the block out where it will be easier to work on.
  18. I'm going to pull mine soon. Today I took the head and manifolds off - and I only broke one stud and one head bolt. For me that's lucky.
  19. I have a 47 P15 2 door sedan. It smokes. Going up a slight grade I've got to go to 2nd gear. Not good. Compression is about 55 to 100 lbs. Today I took off the head. I don't think it looked that bad. Valves looked okay - but then I'm not sure what they are supposed to look like. I am 99% finished with my 48 and the extra money is burning a hole in my pocket. So all that build up for the question: Should I take it in and have it professionally rebuilt or is there a way to figure out the problem first? Rings I can do but what if it needs boring out? I had the motor on my 48 done and it runs like brand new (which I guess it is). I have some pictures but they don't show much. any ideas? d-
  20. Just thought I'd jump into this morass: To bring a small amount of silliness into this THERE IS NO UP IN SPACE. the world is round. It's an optical illusion. Which is further west Reno or Los Angeles?
  21. Dual exhaust/carbs is like peeing in a wet suit... no one can tell but it gives you a warm feeling...
  22. I hope no one takes offense - it seems a bit macabre
  23. It's the Golden Gate National Cemetery - in San Bruno. My mother was a woman Marine and is buried there. As a kid I grew up in San Bruno when Tanforan was still there. Tanforan was a Japanese relocation center. Not all of our history is something to be proud of. As old as I am it seems silly to drive all the way up to the city to show my dead mother my car. But it's just like the one I went home in from the hospital. My father is interred in Colma. There are some famous people in there but I can't think of them. I also remember the Cliff House and Playland at the Beach at the end of Golden Gate Park.
  24. I don't know if this has been mentioned - and for all you ace mechanics it's probably not a problem - but for me the only down side to dual exhaust is getting to the valves. I've been putting it off because the only way I can see to get to them is to take off the manifold. Is there another way?
