  1. I always remember my folks talking about where they were Dec 7 and I thought it was silly to remember one day like that. Now I find I am remembering one day. Sequoia High School, Redwood City, California. My junior year. I was in PE. The principal came over the intercom but no one paid any attention. When it finally sunk in I remember there was no sound except the basketballs that had been abandoned and were bouncing to a rest. They echoed in the quiet gym. They let school out. What a sad day. The end of Camelot.
  2. How thoughtful for that information. Thank you. This is like getting a pony for Christmas. Does the supplier install them?
  3. I have spent so much money on my 48. I am finally done with all the big stuff. I have paid all the credit cards off. My next big splurge is a garage. I've been looking at metal ones so I'm planning on getting one tall enough so I can put a lift in it, put one car on the lift and drive the other one under. Do you have any names you can recommend? I went to the LA Auto show last week end and saw one made by Pacific Lift - $2700. That's what I paid for upholstery. I've spent so much time under my car that I keep finding new things to do. I want to track down all the zerk fittings and replace them. I think I'm going to retire in about 2 years so I'm planning ahead. I have always been told that he who dies with the most toys is still dead.
  4. Finally some advice I can understand - And while I may have taken it wrong at least you didn't chastise me for yet another superfluous thread. I've got the book in the air. Perhaps I will send pictures. I'm looking into buying one of those electric lifts. For as much time as I spend under the car it may be worth it. Again thanks for the positive encouragement. d-
  5. The pictures are so great - thanks. It's funny how clear the pictures look this way rather than when you're on your back, in the cold, under the car, when it's dark. Thank you for the shot. I have the parts book but sometimes when I look at the exploded view I have trouble visualizing how it all goes together. Thanks for the offer of the split bearing. I feel so silly because I remember when I had them in my hands and I said these are so small I've got to put them some where safe. The good news is I'm getting my garage cleaned out looking for them. d-
  6. I've done this before and do not remember having this much trouble. I finally found where the piece goes that I couldn't find but I'm still having problems. I just can't visualize how it goes together. I don't know what the part is called. Something with the clutch. I finally got the one piece (picture) on the bell housing but can't figure out where the ball goes. I fear I'm going to have to take it all apart just to get it in. I truly hope I'm not the only person to have such problems. And to make this worse (which I do best) I took the split bearing out and I knew it was important so I put it somewhere safe and now I can't find it. Are those something that can be purchased in a parts store? I feel guilty bothering you guys. I just don't have a lot of friends and the ones I do have don't know squat about cars. thanks for your help d-
  7. 96% I had to guess on some but most were from when I was in high school. Missed 2. It's funny because kids today wouldn't even know the names of some of those cars. I told the kids in my class that I had a Packard and they said wow - who makes it?
  8. Most of you guys know all this stuff and I, for some reason, always have to learn things the hard way. I took my engine out and had it rebuilt. Putting it back in I noticed I had some extra parts and I couldn't remember where they went. I TOOK PICTURES!!! I know people are always saying that but I actually did. When you're taking a part off you tell yourself "How could I not remember where that goes - it's obvious." Well, trust me you can forget. I was having trouble with the linkage, could not visualize from the parts book, checked my pictures and presto there it was - pictures right out of the car. In the old days you had to waste film, had to have it processed, and couldn't zoom in on a single area. Some day I'm going to have to embrace the 21st century. Anyway for you week end mechanics like me: take pictures of everything. If you don't have a digital camera it will be worth the investment. Just thought I'd share. d-
  9. Just thought I'd jump in: Chu Lai RVN 1968 - 1969 MAG 12, 1st MAW I was in the MAG 12 bomb dump "better kills through chemistry" where has the time gone?
  10. That's probably my next step. I'm just not sure it will be worth it. The carpeting has been glued down. Who thinks of those things?
  11. Thanks - part numbers help - pictures help - I'm a slow learner. I've got to tell you this is the last engine I'm taking out. 30 years ago it was great fun rolling under a car. Now I've got to get taller jack stands because my gut is so big I can't squeeze under the car. Plus the getting up is not all that it's cracked up to be. I truly appreciate all the help. d-
  12. Little by little it's coming together. Thanks for the pictures. I ended up loosening the brackets on the bell housing so I could put the spacers behind. A big sigh of relief. I've got most of the other parts accounted for except the one pictured below. I just don't know where it goes.
  13. I have put several engines in cars since I was out of high school. I put a rebuilt engine in my 48 Plymouth without a hitch. I am so embarrassed to go before you with my plea. first: I have left over parts!! I feel so stupid. I took the stuff off before I took it to the machine shop. I thought how hard can this be? I pulled the 48 next to the 47 and I can't find the parts. Is it possible there are differences in the two engines? The last pic is the 47. If you look down by the dipstick you can see on the block 2 openings and over to the right another. Those are oil out, in, and gauge but I'm not sure which is which. But if you look at the other pic, the 48, the oil gauge is over by the oil filler tube. I looked and the 47 has the holes but there are bolts in them. All the extra parts I believe go to the clutch and linkage but I can't find where it all bolts up. In the parts book there is an exploded view but I just can't visualize where they go. I truly apologize for my sophomoric questions. It must seem silly to you old hands. But I'm a school teacher not a mechanic. thanks for any help. d-
  14. I knew it was a car but from what I can find it's not a specific car. I guess it's just an old bucket. Any old car. I don't remember what they called Fords. I believe the Chevy was a Tin Lizzy - but I'm not sure where that came from.
  15. I'm not sure if it's a regional word - I know it's old. I'm reading a book about Pretty Boy Floyd and the author keeps referring to a "flivver". I'd never heard of such a thing. Without looking it up (as I had to do) am I the only one that has never heard the word before? I'm born and raised California. Floyd came from Oklahoma and I was thinking it might be a local word. Just thought I'd pass it along.
  16. so I guess my question is: can I over tighten? Right now I am using the "feel" method. So far the engine hasn't fallen out.
  17. This should be easy. I just put new engine mounts on my 47. Is there a torque I should use? I don't want to muscle them on and wreck something but I don't want them so loose the nuts fall off. That was easy. Now that the engine is back in I'm having trouble remembering where all the little stuff goes. I was trying to find pictures of the clutch linkage but I'm not having a lot of luck. It's okay - when all else fails I'll just pull the 48 up and copy. See now that's a really good reason to have 2 cars.
  18. My question is how do you adjust the valves? I have a dual exhaust and the only way I can get to the valves is take the manifold off. Is there an easier way?
  19. This has been going on for weeks and I don't know how it works. I bought some molding clips - they were too big and appeared to be the wrong ones. I bought another set and was assured these were right. What am I doing wrong? The clips are too big for the hole. What holds the molding to the car? The clips don't seem to fasten to any thing. Are there different clips for different years? This is becoming extremely frustrating. The clips will fit but with a little bit of prodding. Is there an SOP for putting the molding on? I'm not even sure which way is up. Thank you for your patience.
  20. Once again I feel most stupid. as an old girlfriend used to say "You missed the hole." I pushed the engine too far back. There aren't two holes I just need now to figure out how to move the engine and transmission 1/2" forward. How hard can that be? I'm sorry to have bothered you with my incompetence. I am appreciative of all your help and patience.
  21. First I can't find a 20 yr old willing to get his hands dirty. Or one that knows how to handle a wrench. Second I am including a picture of the bracket which I finally got on. No one told me the top bolts we 9/16 and the bottom were 1/2. I guess we're supposed to figure that sort of stuff out the hard way. Next is a picture of the bell housing. There is a hole at the very end - I'm wondering if that's the hole for rear motor mounts. There's about 1/2" difference. Weird. I may have mixed up the pix but you'll see.
  22. That's the one!! Thank you. One more problem: I bought a clutch housing dust pan - it doesn't seem to fit. 2 innocent questions: There are two holes at the rear of the engine. Is it possible to put the bolt for the motor mounts in the wrong hole? It seems like the motor is too far to the rear so the dust pan doesn't fit and the pulley is not situated right. Also, Don, while I've got your attention: I was looking at the picture you posted with the U shaped bolts for the front motor mounts. Saw them in the parts book. I don't have them. Will regular bolts work? I guess I should send some pictures. I notice you don't have your dust pan on. Can it be put on after the engine is in? Remember when you were 20 and sliding under a car was fun - and easy. I got to tell you after 60 it's a little more work getting all the way down to the ground and then all the way back again. Thanks again for the pix. I guess I'm a visual learner.
  23. I was sure I posted this last night - I might have done it in my sleep and it never got on. Here goes (I truly feel ignorant posting this but I know someone will share the answer with me) I took my engine in to the machine shop. I thought I had taken everything off. When I got the engine back there were parts - all cleaned and pretty - in a box. I'm embarrassed to admit - I don't know where they go. They are called Clutch Housing Brackets (L&R). On page 60 in the parts catalog. (#6-09-11) I looked at all the blow up pictures of the engine and I can't find where they go. Please understand how foolish I feel. thanks for your help
  24. I may have misspoke. I believe it was a business coupe. I just know it didn't fit my sedan. It wasn't off by much but it was off. d-
  25. Don: you must have a magnificent picture library with an incredible filing system. When ever a topic comes up you always seem to have picture back up. It's funny how some of the simplest things can escape our minds. I never thought about removing the floor board - how easy that will be to get to everything. Thank you for the idea. I guess that's what make this forum so valuable. This picture doesn't show and I'm having trouble finding the other picture. But the pulley is about 1/4 " inside the motor mount bracket. The way it sits now I don't think I could get the generator belt to line up.
