Very cool. Thank you. I'm wondering if that was the stock color. Mine is the same gray. Not a primer but gray. I've seen a lot painted the same color as the car but I think I'd like to stay stock. I've seen a decal for the Thermador on the bay. That might be a nice touch.

I am lucky I don't know anybody here because I sure feel stupid. Here is the trick - I had the front of the car up on stands. I guess the car was tweaked just enough to hold the hood closed. Once it was flat on the ground it popped right open. I've got to tell you there was a moment of panic. I'm trying to get everything done for a big ride next week. Thank you all for the help - I can't believe the solution was so simple. I can't believe how embarrassed I feel.

I got one end off - the problem was the whole end was sealed. It almost looked like tar to keep the water in. So I couldn't get "inside" the unit. The problem is my wife. Since there was a rat's nest inside she was afraid we would be breathing rat poop fumes. Since I couldn't figure out how to get in the unit I am soaking the whole thing in bleach and water. I'm going to let it sit over night and hope that calms my wife. The other thing is I'm not sure how much water you put in the thing and what is the little draw string for? There is a guy on the bay selling copies of the manual for $10 - what a scam. But then I may have to do it just to find out how to work the cooler. Can't find anything on line. Thank you all for the help and information. I figure I'll hook it up next week end after I let it dry. Hopefully I won't get the plague. I'm driving to Sacramento on the 21st. About 400 miles. Wish me luck.

I must be doing something wrong. At the top of the page I hit Search... then I enter thermador and the only post that comes up are mine and something about a car in New Zeland. I just have trouble with electrical communication. At least I have the name and I can search on line. Thank you very much for your response.

I was wondering if anyone had information on the window air cooler. There is no name or any identification marks on it. It was in the car when I got it and I really didn't pay any attention to it. Today I was going to see if I could figure it out - there was a rat's nest inside. I can't figure out how to take it apart to clean the inside. Does anyone have a manual? Or even know what they are called? I would appreciate any feed back. Thanks

I have a 47 Chevy which is completely disassembled. I was just going to do a fender, then the bed and... you get the idea. There are places on line and catalogs where you can get most any part for the Chevy pick up. Mine has a trans with a granny low (which I never used) and a very low rear end. It will go straight up a hill with the way it's geared. Problem it goes down the hill at the same speed. It's a bullet proof engine - just change the rear end for highway speeds and better mileage. I've been a member of the Vintage Chevrolet Club since 1969. it's a work in progress.

Well now I've done it. I hope someone else has done it too and can tell me an easy fix. I can't get my hood open. The hood release cable moves back and forth so I don't think that's the problem. I'm afraid to put pressure some where that might break something. I've done what I think are the obvious remedies: push down thinking it will pop up. I really can't get it to push down. Push up thinking it will break lose. Nothing. This is really frustrating. Now I don't know if this will have anything to do with it but the front wheels are up on stands. Would that angle have anything to do with it? This is really scary. I would appreciate any ideas that doesn't include taking off the front fender. thanks

Speaking of clothes pins... remember pants stretchers? I get a catalogue from Vermont Store that has the old clothes pins - no spring, just wood. You're right a lot of stuff has gone the way of the buggy whip.

I'm going to take 14 north to the 58 through Tehachapi and miss the grapevine. Pick up 99 right into Sacramento. Very little grades and not as fast as I 5. I made the drive in my 47 Chevy pick up. You just have to be patient. 55 instead of 75. You still get there and get to see more of the scenery. it's going to be cool.

First off I just changed the brake light switch. This is a very complicated, complex procedure that requires manual dexterity, a knowledge of wires, and the ability to not only unscrew the switch (which they actually carried at my auto parts store) but reassemble said switch to its proper location. While I was doing this my wife was in the garden playing in the dirt. She had the gall to say to me "When you're finished PLAYING with your car would you give me a hand." PLAYING? I was performing a complicated procedure. I hardly would call that playing. The fact that I took a rag and wiped off the oil pan may have been a bit excessive but it was cosmetic and acceptable. This was a lot of WORK which I'm sure many of you are familiar with. Made all the more satisfying by seeing my brake light light up. Just wanted to get some humble opinions. I'm getting her ready for a trip to Sacramento about 400 miles. My wife won't go - she doesn't trust the car. 60 years ago people wouldn't think twice about such a journey. I'm ready to go. Happy 4th. to all. Got a lot done.

Spotted a '39 DeSoto at PA Junkyard Today
Don Jordan replied to JerseyHarold's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Why is that? I've been to some Pick-A-Parts and found the same thing. For some reason they are not allowed to sell the whole car. Seems silly and a waste of a lot of good iron. -
In California when they speak of giants they are usually referring to redwood trees. And they do get big. They are a visual enormity. Beautiful.

I believe you go east from New York and bear left.

Adjusted my valves with the engine running
Don Jordan replied to Joe Flanagan's topic in P15-D24 Forum
No one has touched on this so I'd like to get some feed back. I have dual exhaust - I just thought it would be cool but I'm going to have to take the manifold off to get to the valves which makes it difficult to run the engine. Is there a problem setting them cold? I had the engine rebuilt and don't have very many miles on it but I'm assuming it's starting to settle in. The other day I heard a little chatter. I want to drive it to San Francisco (about 450 miles) and I don't want to take any chances. -
OT-Something for the old guys from San Francisco

I really admire the older dash clusters. Very plain and simple. It's very attractive. Even the 48 Plymouth requires more eye movement to see all the gauges. My Toyota has a light that comes on when I'm out of oil. A light comes on when I'm out of gas. A light comes on when I lose my fan belt. I'd rather have a simple dash. JMHO -
OT-Something for the old guys from San Francisco

As a kid I grew up on 35th and Lincoln Way. I was walking distance to Playland. It broke my heart when they tore it down to put up apartments. Ah progress. I still remember they had a sailing ship that (I don't remember who now) someone used to sail around the arctic. I remember feeding the ducks in Golden Gate Park. Crossing the GG Bridge was .25 - I don't know what it is now but it's up there. Memories... My father worked for a DeSoto/Plymouth dealership on Van Ness in San Francisco. Here we go skipping down memory lane. -
Thank you very much. Just because I thought I had done everything right I'm going to switch out the weak carb with a spare and then try adjusting all over again. I did rebuild both carbs and with my luck I may have screwed something up. It's like when you're looking for something you always find something else you were looking for. If I keep fiddling I'm bound to get it right. That's one of the reasons I like these old cars - I couldn't do this with my Toyota. thanks again.

While we're on the subject: I bought this manifold a long time ago. Can anyone tell what kind of carbs go on it? Right now I have 2 single barrel B&B on the car and an extra manifold. Just thought I'd pass on a picture. I will check the linkage Saturday now that the temp has dropped to a more comfortable 90°
-
I feel really silly asking this but how do you set the vacuum? I have one line from the vacuum advance and a Y to the carbs. Don - I have that tool. On one carb the red ball pegs at the top. The other one it barely moves. I guess it's time to double check the linkage. I assume you just look down the throat how else would you measure? This is all new ground for me. I only put the 2 carbs on because I thought it looked neat. And no one sees them but me. This week end it's back to the linkage. thank you all.
-
It was split I believe. I think George Asche did it. The linkage is fine. Everything I can see I've checked. I guess I may have to remove the manifold. I have a manufactured manifold but it's for 2 barrel carbs and only a single exhaust. I was thinking of selling it but have no idea what it's worth.

A little back ground. I've got dual carbs on an otherwise stock P15. The carb in the back will suck your hand in and stall the engine. The one in front barely sucks at all and if you cover it it doesn't change the idle. I rebuilt both. Adjusted again and again. Today I was talking to an old boy who said it sounds like a blockage in the manifold. Is there a way to check that without taking the manifold off? The car runs perfect - but I'm sure it's running on just one carb. I can't imagine what would plog it up. Final question: Will it hurt anything if I keep driving? Thanks.

Which ever one you use my advice is make sure the nut is on the spline. When I pulled mine off I thought I'd been shot. Very loud noise. Without the nut on I'm sure the drum would have gone across the room. I ended up hitting the puller with a lead hammer used for knock off wheels.

That was the information I truly needed. You guys are the greatest. Sure as $*** I would have taken it out and pumped the brake. It's funny - it's just the little things that are so important. I've heard that experience comes from bad decisions I've also heard you can learn from other's experience. Thanks.

I hope someone is still reading this. How does the stop light switch come off. I'm asking this before I break it. I was looking in the parts manual and I can't figure it out. Looking down at it it looks like there are hydraulic lines. I don't want to have to bleed the brakes just to change the switch.
