Floorboard Metal Repair How To
FlashBuddy replied to FlashBuddy's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
What kind of welding would that be? What kind of equipment would I need? Would I be better served to find an expert and hand it off? -
I hear you @Los_Control. Purchased a set of new wires for Roxanne but never put them in. I saw a spool of cloth covered ignition wire and it looked so sexy. I'll want to buy a few feet and make a replacement ignition wire set. Should be fun. Roxanne has been getting out and about town, but now is stuck until I figure out why my speedo quit. After pulling the speedometer out of the dash and jacking up the rear, putting her in gear I can see the cable is not turning. Likely I'll try to clean up the tranny side and detach the cable before ordering a replacement from Napa (about ten bucks).
-
What is the conventional wisdom when remiving the tranny cover and seeing this? Shall I hust ignore it, clean the rust off and Por paint it? Replace it? Add material? Don't know a thing about adding material and likely welding, but I'm not afraid to learn and may even be willing and possibly able to purchase some welding equipment if it's not too expensive?

I think @bach4660 has it right. After taking off three layers of black plastic tape, I found another rubber hosehose section. This one was green like a garden hose. I managed to peel it back to the original cloth wires which aren't in great shape but will have to do for now. I was able to solder them cleanly to the new tail light wires and wrap it all up with some new cloth tape. Crazy farmers eh?
-
On my 1950 B2B the tail light wires come through what looks like a rubber hose. What? Why? Check out the ancient twist connector. It fell apart when I unwrapped the tape. Plastic tape BTW. See the corroded wires inside tells me it has to come off.

Hey, that kid looks pretty fast!

Test Your Knowledge - 1950 B2B Tail Light Curiosity
FlashBuddy replied to FlashBuddy's topic in Off Topic (OT)
LOL - Got a message from another pilothouse owner who did the exact same thing. He initially thought the brake light switch on the master cylinder was at fault. Its on to the non working speedo next. Hope I don't hook that up backwards! -
Rebuild the heater, as soon as it warms up! Fix speedometer (just quit on me yesterday) Get gas guage working. New tires mounted & balanced. Start pondering my dented fender and bent tailgate.

Test Your Knowledge - 1950 B2B Tail Light Curiosity

Yes! We have a winner. The replacement socket was wired with red and white while the truck has black and red. I had connected red to red. Seemed like the right thing to do but obviously it's backasswards. -
Do you ever go to bed thinking of some troubling issue and wake up with an "aha!" moment? I certainly do. I finally got a new 1154 bulb socket mounted into the tail light can and wired up. I had Max (my son) stomp the brake pedal with my fingers crossed; it works! I had Max pull the light switch on the dash; it works! Finally, I had Max leave the lights on and then stomp the brake; It works - sorta. The difference is very subtle and that troubled me. Can you figure it out? Why is the light not significantly brighter when the brake is applied? I woke up this morning with the answer. No, I'm not going to tell you but rather give you some time to figure it out on your own.

Yes! I have one of my trucks vintage plates on the front and the "legal" plate on the back.

I learned that method in Birmingham high school auto shop circa 1967.

Hubcap Red Lettering Touchup Paint
FlashBuddy replied to FlashBuddy's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
How in the heck do you hold the camera and paint at the same time? Color me "impressed".- 21 replies

Interestingly, I found my silver solder and used it on a cracked hubcap. Sanded and polished and it worked suprisingly well.

@Plymouthy Adams, how do you know that?

Hubcap Red Lettering Touchup Paint
FlashBuddy replied to FlashBuddy's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Took the model paint, Chrysler Engine Red for a test drive on a couple of spare hubcaps laying about. They look perfect if you stand five feet away. Ordered a can if Dupli-color and will give that a go soon. I've go one real funky hubcap I am planning on using bondo, chrome spray paint, Dupli-Color DE1632 Ceramic Chrysler Industrial Red Engine and clear coat. Should be an interesting experiment. Waiting for warmer weather first!- 21 replies

Hubcap Red Lettering Touchup Paint

Who knew? Amazon.com: Dupli-Color DE1632 Ceramic Chrysler Industrial Red Engine is the same paint?! That makes it easy peasy. What, after painting the engine they used the extra to throw a splash of color onto the hupcaps? Cheap genius. Where did I find them @pflaming? You sent them to me! I'm curious, are the chrome lines showing through from polishing wear or was that originally intenional?- 21 replies

In the process of refreshing a collection of 1950 Dodge dog dish hubcaps. Does anybody know what color of red was originally used? I used a color meter and came up with hex code #A83928 and or RGB 168 57 40. A quick trip to the hobby shop netted me a close equivalent - Model Master 2732 Chrysler Engine Red. I've been unable to find it in a spray can. Perhaps if I had a color code of some kind I could get a spray can mixed up?

Truck: On Rebuilding a Worn-Out Pickup and Other Post-Technological Adventures by John Jerome An interesting read and will ring true with all of us Pilothouse owners, especially those living in America's heartland. Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll ship it out snail mail next chance I get to go to the post office. First come first served of course!

Nothing beats weight in the bed of the truck for quick and secure addition of traction. In the winter, we would put a tree round or two back there. I'll be switching to sand bags after reading @pflaming's post - thanks paul.

Proper rims for 50 pilot house
FlashBuddy replied to Boyne50Pilot's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Ha! Just purchased four 215 70 16 from Discount Tire at $60/tire. Includes mounting and balancing of course. http://discountti.re/2CejWb7 The plan is to roll around on these while I perform ongoing maintenance; wiring, fix the heater, lights... AND Save up for a set of those wide white Cokers ☺️ I get the feeling that my current Atlas 6.00x16, three of 'em are 4 ply & one is 6 ply are 60 plus years old or therebouts - the small cracks in the sidewall are giving me some pause. -
I just glued mine on with JB Weld. I was going to try silver solder and hopens my soldering skills were up to the task. If not the plan was to hire a jeweler for the job - but I lost my silver solder! So I went with the epoxy It's holding well so far.
