  1. Back to the BBQ. I spent the day under my truck doing a second safety check. Found a loose shifter lever and some soft wire 'cotter keys' which I replaced with real ones and washers where required. I marked all items with a yellow paint pencil. I did snug the oil pan bolts, just a little turn, got to sneak up on those. I only had 70 miles on the oil, but it was the first oil after the rebuild so I thought there might be some debrie in it. Also changed the oil in the transmission. The gas tank is full so tomorrow I'm going to take a drive up the hill. In 10 miles the road climbs from 500' to 3,000'. That should be a nice test. There is a good pizza place up there so. . . wish me well.

  2. mboer70 Check out this thread on the hotrodders.com site. I put together a list of parts sources / info for a guy looking to build a flathead. All the info I included is available on this forum but not so much flathead info on the other forum. So, I combined it in a single post for him. Hope this helps. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/source-mopar-flat-head-6-performance-parts-205599.html

  3. Not bad. And it should be a 65 or up axle, tapered 5 lug stuff through 64. Mine failed on my 69 D100 in middle of nowhere (okay, Trementon) Utah during a cross country move. Idiot who rebuilt the rear end did not know the bearings were greased instead of splash lubricated. 2 days for parts to be sourced, ordered and arrive. Less than a day for the re-rebuild. Nice truck.

  4. Looks like the bearing got very hot and toasty!

  5. Bummer....Now what??? Do you have a new one sourced? Any damage to the housing? I assume this was the side with no grease.....That's a nice axle puller .... I've got a similar one.

  6. I picked up the 3.54 rear end yesterday. All looks good, especially after cleaning it up good in the parts cleaner. It has 4 spider gears like the truck 4.11, same axle spline count, and same mounting bolt pattern. The bearings look and feel good. It took me a while to get it cleaned up last night, and some friends came over putting a damper on things in the garage. Last night I was only able to clean it and make a new gasket. I woke up today and went out in the garage. I swapped over the pinion seal from the old one to the new one because it was brand new seal. I did have to swap my drive shaft yolk to the new pinion which was just a matter of pulling the old one off and pushing mine on. I put the pumpkin in, and all went smooth until it was time to put the axles in. I got the axles and bolted the backing plates in and I had too much end play. I spent most of the day fooling with shims getting that right. It's still not perfect, they are a little on the loose side but I'd rather that than too tight. While messing with all that I managed to rip one of the new outer axle seals I just put in a few months ago so I'll have to wait to finish it once I get the new seals. I filled it up with oil and greased the outer bearings. It rolls over nice and smooth. Looks like I'm in business!
