If the engine is original to the car, the fisrt three didgets of the engine number represent the model number. Chrysler corp used numbers P for Plym, D for Dodge, C for Chrysler, S for Desoto, and I foe industrial. umbers usually matched the body series of the same design. So look fo a casting boss above the gennerator just below the head. should be D something.

I believe 49 Dodges were D 42 so if yours is a later year it might be a 43 or 44 Not a Dodge owner so I'm not hundred percent on the model designations. My father had a 49 meadobrook in that body style. It is the first car I remember.

Greg you have me wondering about something now too. For 50 plymouth that fastback model was on the shorter chassis and was a P19. The longer cars were P20s. Same in 51-52 the cheaper SWB cars were P22s and the longer ones P23s. What I've heard though is that even though they had 2 P#s all the engines in 50 were stamped P20 and in 51-52 all P23.

I think the Dodges were all built on the same frames. The Plyms though with different body model desigations, had the year appropriat engine numbers.

I have a 52 wayfarer and best I can determine my 52 is a D41. The manual only refers to d41, 42 etc. but never seems to mention wayfarer, coronet, etc.

Yes for some reason Dodge seems to have had a large jump in #s. Plymouth didn't jump much. P15 for 46-48. I believe p17 & p18 for 49 and P19&P20 for 50. 51&52 share P22 & p23 due to the korean war.

In '49 Dodges were D29 & D30. The D29 is the short wheelbase, ie: Wayfarer

In '50 Dodges were D33 & D34. The D33 is the Wayfarer.

In '51 & '52 they are the D41 & D42.

The Wayfarer had 115" wheelbase. The Coronet and Meadowbrook 123.5"

All '49 engines stamped D30, All '50 engines stamped D33.

49 roadster nailed it..

for a tad more it is a 230 cu in engine w/7.0 CR 103HP at 3600RPM and 190 ft lb or torque at 1200 RPM normal oil pressure is 40 lbs

the 50 D33 has the following numbers...Detroit starts with 37060001

Los Angles starts with number 48502001 and San Leandro starts at 48004001

all engines will be stamped D34 and series begins with engine number D34-1001

To throw in some missing numbers -

1946-48 -

D24 - DeLuxe (US) / Custom - 119.5" & 137.5" wb

D25S - DeLuxe (Canada) - 117" wb

D25C - Kingsway Special DeLuxe (export) / Special DeLuxe (Canada) - 117" wb

1949 -

D29 - Wayfarer (US) - 115" wb

D30 - Meadowbrook (US) /Coronet (US) /Custom (Canada) - 123.5" & 137.5" wb

D31 - Kingsway (export)/DeLuxe (Canada) - 111" wb

D32S - Kingsway DeLuxe (export) / DeLuxe (Canada) - 118.5" wb

D32C - Kingsway Custom (export) / Special DeLuxe (Canada) - 118.5" wb

1950-

D33 - Wayfarer (US) - 115"wb

D34 - Meadowbrook (US) /Coronet (US) /Custom (Canada) - 123.5" & 137.5" wb

D35 - Kingsway (export)/DeLuxe (Canada) - 111" wb

D36S - Kingsway DeLuxe (export) / DeLuxe (Canada) - 118.5" wb

D36C - Kingsway Custom (export) / Special DeLuxe (Canada) - 118.5" wb

1951-52

D39 - Kingsway (export & Canada) - 111" wb

D40-1 - Kingsway DeLuxe (export) / Crusader (Canada) - 118.5" wb

D40-2 - Kingsway Custom (export) / Regent (Canada) - 118.5" wb

D41 - Wayfarer (US) - 115"wb

D42 - Meadowbrook (US) /Coronet - 123.5" & 137.5" wb

Although the American models used the Coronet model number as the engine prefix for all models, the Canadian models used the model number from that car as the engine prefix. Thus a 1950 Dodge Special Deluxe, model D36C, would have "D36C-" as the engine prefix and the lowly DeLuxe, model D35. would have "D35". And each prefix started at 1001 and went up.
