Rodney Bullock Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Hey Fella's I went to NAPA and found points file. This thing is for real. It cleans points. After using this I will never use sand paper again. The Sude started to give me grif like the plymouth last week. I ordered some points and cap, rotor for it, mean while I bought the file, used it on the Stude points and it cleaned them. Thses actors were leaving the switch on in these old cars. They would let them stall by letting out the clutch prematurely and the car would cut off and they would not bother to cut the switch off. I found out everbody has had the same problem. I don't know how I would do without it now:D Quote
Frank Blackstone Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 you might as well work on them the ol' skool way. It is part of the continuum to pay homage to our ancestral mechanics. My best relatives were gearheads. Uncle Harry Grady owned a 1903 Autobug rumored to be only one of two in existence. His grandson has it now and may be his 401 for retirement. Quote
oldmopar Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 I have had a points file for years some of the cars I have dragged home have started after filing the points. Filing the points and cleaning the plugs sometimes fixes that ran when parked vehicle. Quote
captden29 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 i had a 51 buick i drove home from calif. to NY after my military service. eventually stored it in my sisters yard. she finally demanded i remove it and i did everything right to start it.nothing worked until i cleaned up the points and it fired right up. same thing with my 54 windsor. when i bought it it had been sitting for 25 years.wouldn't start after putting on new carb, plugs, new fuel, etc. soon as i cleaned the points it fired up' . wish i had a real points file but from reading this thread i guess they don't make them anymore. flea market or garage sale find. dennis Quote
greg g Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 They still make them, numerous sources. Its just that most counter people at most newstyle parts stores have no idea what points are or what a file is other than some collections of bytes with in a computer. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted July 25, 2008 Author Report Posted July 25, 2008 Hey Dennis, They are on a spinning rack at NAPA. Thay are called "ignition file" They are special NAPA service tools. I also asked about the "magnetic Screw driver" The parts guy said they are out right now check back next thursday. The NAPA store is our best parts source "local" I went in for points for the stude and they had them at the warehouse. You just can't beat that. I am so happy to have them, It is a very sturdy file all odf us should have one. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 I used one of those files when I was a kid to file on model cars, like to remove door handles and such. Worked OK for that. Found one of those files in my stuff not long ago. Haven't needed it for points lately however. Doesn't hurt to have one available. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted July 25, 2008 Author Report Posted July 25, 2008 Bob, that's exactly what I got, that file will take enough off to make the points work. I think we should put a kit together. It would make a great auction subject. I would be the first to get it. Quote
Bodacious Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 I've owned a points file forever. It stays in the same pouch as my ignition wrenches. I suppose some of you younger ones don't know what those are either. Damn I feel old! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 25, 2008 Report Posted July 25, 2008 Now, Mr Bo, lets not talk too much about "old", since I will be officially "ancient" tomorrow when I hit the big 65. Also, tomorrow is Ed Juneau's b-day, (dodgepu1946), but he's nowhere near as old as me. Just a young whippersnapper. You know what they say -- you may have to grow old, but you don't have to grow up. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 Happy birthday Bob. Nowhere is it written that you have to grow up. So far I have avoided it altogether and I hit that 65 last week. Party on ! Quote
RHDSP15C Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 Crocus cloth or paper is even better if you find it. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 Thanks Bob Happy Bday too you too. I'll be 29 tomorrow(for the first time-I know some people get stuck at that age). I had an awesome steak dinner last night for my bday. Our favorite steak place gives you free dinner on the thurs of your bday week. So my parents treated everyone else but mine was free! Somehow free steak is even better. Tomorrow I think we are having pizza and cake. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted July 26, 2008 Author Report Posted July 26, 2008 Hey, Happy birthday to all you cats, age is just a number:D I feel just as I did when I was 21. I just can't run, jump and dance as long anymore. I agree, you never grow up. The passion is still there to pursue your goals and have great fun while doing it. That keeps me young. If I lose my passion my life will soon follow. May you never lose your passion for what you truly love. Quote
Normspeed Posted July 26, 2008 Report Posted July 26, 2008 BobT, it's good to see that even us old farts can still hook up with the good looking gals. Must be the convertible. Quote
