Guest dasaint80 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Where can I buy new glass for my 1940 dodge? does anyone have any estimate on how much glass would cost for a 1940 dodge d14? anyone around Philadelphia,PA that can help me out?! Thanks, Steve Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Either use the old windows for patterns, or make patterns and take them into your local auto glass dealers, in your area for prices. You will not be able to get a rear window made, but the flat glass only, if you need a rear window you will have to get a used one somewhere. The side window glass can be safety, but get laminated for the front windshield glass, you would not want it shattering like safety glass if something hit the front window at 60 mph. Side window glass should be around 25 to 40 bucks each, and the front window glass about 40 to 50 bucks each. The glass can be tinted to your liking Quote
greg g Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 one other note the side windows are mirrir image so one side will act as a pattern for the other side if you are missing a piece. As noted everything but the rear window is flat glass and any competent glass shop should be able to cut it using the old ones as a guide. Quote
Guest dasaint80 Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Cool I found http://www.classicflatglass.com/PartsShelf.aspx the seem to have all the glasses. Thanks Steve Quote
oldmopar Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Are they near you I am in NJ and that would not be a bad trip for me. I have a 46 truck that will need a windshield. Ed Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Vintage Glass....do an internet search for one closest to you..exact die cut glass..ground edges and temepred for the side...safety laminate for the windsheild....colors available.. Quote
oldmopar Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Found vintage Glass but they are located in Georgia. wont need this until late this year so no rush. I did send them a email see if they have any other locations. Quote
james curl Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 I believe that Vintage Glass makes most of the major swap meets, they can bring the glass to the swap meet if you pay for the glass ahead of time and ask for delivery at the swap meet. I have bought large metal parts, fenders and doors that way before, they will usually ask to use your part for display so that they do not have to bring extras. Quote
knuckleharley Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 Guys,I just had new tinted glass cut for my 48 coupe, and the people at the glass company said they could only cut laminated glass for the car because tempered glass would be too thick. Now some of you are saying you use tempered glass in your doors and side windows. My local glass company has been in business since the 20's,and they tell me they can't get 1/4 inch thick tempered glass. Do you guys have sources they don't have,or did I hear them wrong? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Tempered glass is standard glass that has been cut then sent out to be "fired" it is this process that makes it tempered..once glass is tempered..its end use has been set as cutting it is impossible...the glass I get from Vintage Glass is processed in this manner...also our local cutter who used to be Bird Glass in Charleston SC also done temper glass to order..this is usally done off site in an oven of capable size and heat Quote
knuckleharley Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 Tempered glass is standard glass that has been cut then sent out to be "fired" it is this process that makes it tempered...... Thanks,Tim. The woman at the local glass place told me that laminated glass was 1/4 inch thick, and tempered glass was 5/16th thick,so the tempered glass wouldn't fit my tracks or rubber. I guess this is what happens in a family owned business when the wife/mother is allowed to run the front office. She doesn't know what the hell she is talking about, and everybody there is afraid to correct her. At any rate,I have laminated glass in my windshield, vent windows, and doors now. Arthur Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 12, 2008 Report Posted February 12, 2008 I just went and measured mine for the record.. 1/4 inch laminate for the front...1/4 tempered for the side...this is the 12 piece set in green tint for the Suburban .............................................and.............................................. I use the tempered for the 41 Dodge Bs. Cpe. side glass and vent....tempered and trust me..setting the glass in the vent frame using the glass setting tape..bit of a pain but well worth it.. Quote
