55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hi all, just downloaded a free acceleration program from our service provider. It seems to make a big difference, it was a 2.64 mb file. Although it is not speedy like DSL highspeed, it sure is a lot better than regular dial-up. Without this program pics used to come down in portions sometimes very slowly, now it comes on much faster. I would not have this crappy dial -up, but I am 2 miles outside of the high speed area..........Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Test pic upload for the Dial-up accelerator Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hi all, here is the test data, my system on dial-up runs about 48 kbps, with the accelerator program, it is running anywhere from 173 kbps, and has peaked at over 900 kbps. Its running from 4 to 10 times faster than normal, it is quite a dramatic difference.........Fred Quote
oldmopar Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 I guess you guys up north do not have cable Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Shel with the accelerator, it now runs 4 to 20 times faster, even at 4 times its around the 200 kbp mark................Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Very Funny, there Pilgrim. We have it all, we have the digital fibre-optic TV , but that is in the city. I Live in the country, just outside of the Highspeed and Digital TV service area, all the towns and cities in this province have cable, we had cable back in the late 60s or early 70s when I was a kid. I can also get satellite Internet service, but don't want to pay the set-up costs. This accelerator, is for us country bumpkins, just outside of the high speed service zone................Fred Quote

55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 I also remember the days before cable too Ed, we had only 4 or 5 TV channels back then..............Fred Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 You might toss out the name of that accelerator program if its available to others..... I'm sure it IS an improvement. I had dialup for quite a while before getting the high speed......there is probably an even faster thing than what I have, but this service is good. A local provider here. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hi Bob, it is part of my service provider's system, don't think it would work on another system. I am sure most of the dial-up service providers will have this soon, this is new for ours. They still cater mostly to the High speed crowd............Fred Quote
Young Ed Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Fred the accelerators came out a few years back. So you are still behind the times Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 Yes they did, but this one is a freebie, and seems to work well, I am running at 628.2kbps on this posting.............Fred Quote
TodFitch Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Yes they did, but this one is a freebie, and seems to work well, I am running at 628.2kbps on this posting.............Fred Putting my network software engineer cap on I have to wonder how it works. . . The maximum information rate that a 64kbps (rest of the world) or 56kbps (North American TDM) link can send is, well 64kbps or 56kbps. Basically that is the physical limit given the 8K/second sampling rate with 8 bits of data that the PSTN use to actually transport data through their network. (T1 voice lines twiddle with the least significant bit for some synchronization between the link ends. That does not hurt voice but basically limits data to 7 bits thus the 56K rate in the US versus the 64K rate in the rest of the world that uses E1 for basic trunking.) Modern modems already have a fair amount of data compression technology built in and web browsers have a reasonable amount of caching for the elements of a page that don't change. It would seem that they must be doing more data compression and a better job of caching data than a stock modem and browser. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Well guys, I'm really old time here. I can't get DSL even though I'm in a major city because the available lines are all taken. As for cable, I don't believe in having to pay for TV so...............I still have those funny looking rabbit ears on my TV's. Wireless did come into the area a few months back. However, to get that I'd be paying for TV, plus the computer making my phone bill about 4 or 5 times what it is now. So.............forget that. Now, my dialup ISP does have an accelerator program that is a free download. I downloaded that over a year or so ago. Don't use it much though. About the only time I use it is when there are a lot of graphics on a site so I don't time out on it. The problem with an accelerator program is that it cashe's what you've already looked at. Then it will download with much greater speed the next time you look at it. Thats good sometimes. However, after a while you'll find that on sites such as this forum you will be looking at the same page and not refreshing as it should. So, in the end they aren't the answer to greater speed, at least as far as I'm concerned. I keep mine turned off most of the time. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 That is basically it, the modem on my computer is not any faster, but woth this program running, evrything downolads a lot faster. Even on webpages I have never been to for a while, appears quite a bit faster than before. Wiofe who works for the srvice provider, and hates dial-up, is somewhat impressed byt the accelerator feature....................Fred Quote
knighthawk Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 I got no clue as what you guys are talking about or what all the numbers mean! My provider here starts going thru the local hardware store and he connects to a national service (?) Anyway, if I call my srevice number ans ask them if they have a speed-up connector thingy, will theu know I mean ? Quote

That's the actual name of the program, so they should know what you are talking about when you ask. Quote
David Maxwell Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 ...perhaps the program simply deletes what it considers redundant data bits. Kinda of permanently compressing the files. The image quality would suffer quite a bit, but still appear good enough for most internet applications. ??? Just a guess? Do you think that could be it? Quote
