Next time you wish to tap an aluminum hole, use a bar of soap....drag the tap across the soap bar filling between the cutting blades of the tap and you should have a smooth and clean cut....and I am not meaning soap clean either. For steel, good oil and or grease...grease if you wishing to keep chips from falling through...start, go a few turns....back it out, clean the chips, fresh grease to trap the next chips. Off topic here, I suppose, but to tap holes in aluminum I use a block of canning wax, just run the tap on that a bit. (I have tapped hundreds of 6-32 holes in 16 gauge aluminum sheet, and I can easily do 4 or 5 holes without the tap clogging up and stripping out the hole. Maybe more, but it's easier to be safe than try to fix the hole after stripping it out.)

I had the same issue drilling the holes, the spindle just resized my brand new, bought just for this job, drill bit. If I haven't thrown it away I'll take a picture of the two diameter bit lol. I ended up just taking it to the machine shop and let them drill and tap it. Should have done that to begin with since I needed the king pins redone anyway, For sure, no aluminum thus the reply that he is using the wrong tap/drilling as he stated the A9 product in his approach to the task..... I meant that I myself was off topic, but just figured I'd mention the canning wax, because it worked really well for the small holes I was tapping, and I also didn't want to have to clean oil off of the parts. (They were for mounting electronics.) The problem I was having was that the tap was clogging up because of it being such fine threads (32 per inch). But I have often used soap when driving a screw into hardwood. (When I was a teenager, I learned from a older gentleman finish carpenter to rub the nail across my forehead to lubricate it a bit - especially the really small ones.) Desert Rat
I mentioned using the the A-9. It is an aluminum cutting fluid. We've been using this on the job drilling and tapping for years and it works great.. Even with steel.
Loren
What ever happened to “Mystic Metal Mover”? They used to have a counter display with a tap, the product and a container of un-threaded nuts. To demonstrate the product you’d start a tap in a nut and when it hung up you could squirt some of the product onto it and zip the tap went magically through the nut. In that setting it really worked! But I will be darned if I can find anymore.

Loren
I should learn to keep my mouth shut until I check on Amazon! They have everything and if they don’t they have partners who do. One company sells a reformulated version 3 pints for $52. I am not going to spend $52 just to try the reformulated version. There has to be a reason nobody sells it anymore! Can’t fool me, I am too ignorant!
