That will do it everytime.  Had similar situation on my 39 Desoto. Used the car in my daughters wedding. When we were getting ready to take the car back hom ehte next day i noticed that the char was not charging. I was able to get home just on the battery.  The next day the car was dead as a door nail.  Thought that maybe the generator needed to be rebuilt.

Started looking around in the engine area and then went to the volt regulator and also saw that the wire coming from the generator the A wire had broken off at the terminal end at the VR.  I put on a jumper wire from the gen A post to the A post on the VR nad was able to get the issue solved.

copper plumbing solder and flux

Plumbing solder/flux is usually acid based, use electronic solder and flux.

Up graded it to 8g /w shrink wrapped connections.

Yes, you want good strain relief to prevent this from happening again.  When I rewired my 51 every connection was crimped, soldered and heat shrinked.  Then the wire runs were taped together using cloth electrical tape for further relief.
