Plymouthy Adams Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 US Navy 1966-1970USS Larson DD-830 I had to go check the history of this boat as I did not recognize the style of the ship..now I know why..keel laid in 44..served just under 30 years for US..sold (probably given) to S. Korea..where she served till 99..placed in museum in Korea..what a history.. I started work for the US Navy at Charleston Shipyard Fire Control..and seen many boat and sub come through there..lot of people just don't know what all is envolved and interacting form one end of the the boat to the other..16 years later..the yard is closed, thanks Bill C. and I transfer to DoD US Air Force..yard period for a boat and its sailors is a very intense time..hats off to any sailor who underwent a extended overhaul period. David Mac Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 Tim: You are correct, the ship was "transfered" to S. Korea in 72 and was decomissioned in 99 and restored for a musem ship in Jongdongjin South Korea. Quote

Korea in 72 and was decomissioned in 99 and restored for a musem ship in Jongdongjin South Korea. Well, your ship faired better than mine! I joined the Ramsey crew less than a year after being launched. It was the second ship in what turned out to be the last new class of ships to be steam powered, albeit with a 1200 PSI steam plant burning JP-5. The gas turbine vessels that followed made much more sense, so the few ships of this class were all laid up. Turkey turned them down (probably a wise decision!), so they tried to sell them to someplace in South America as steam generating plants. When that deal fell through, they wound up sinking the Ramsey in a live fire exercise in the north Pacific. Our web site obtained some film of the ship being hit with a rocket, a lot of 5" shells, and finally torpedoed to get her to sink. The old girl was uncooperative all the way to the end. USS Ramsey, originally DEG-2, later FFG-2. Marty Quote
