I can only get alignment at 5 and 10 O'clock, not 7?

Pulled the timing plug at #6 and it is at TDC

So now I have this sinking feeling, any ideas?

Am I missing something so obvious?

to get the slot at the 7-1 alignment angle...you will need to index your oil pump as it is the pump that orients to the camshaft gear and eventually drives the distributor...the manner to index the oil pump to insert on the cam and attain this position is described in the manual...you need to index the pump gear as it inserts and align to the cut of the cam gear the oil pump shaft will rotate just a tad...

Thank you, yes I was just kind of rereading through the book and I will have to add that step to my check list because it was missing

indexing the pump is often not cross linked to the distributor in the books....only the later book will make reference to the 7 position.....but I agree with the fact there should be a line in the sand for this....if all were established by a book protocol there would be less guess by others when they encounter a car that seemingy will not time out right...less chance of someone calling foul and jumped timing chain....

Just put #1 in the 5 hole and go from there with the rest of the firing order.  Then document the situation for future reference and the next owner.  Engine won't know the difference.
