billrigsby Posted June 4, 2021 Report Posted June 4, 2021 Searching everywhere to determine the order the oil rings go in. The First and Second came clearly marked, but the last two are just called 'oil rings' From the bad photo of the ones that came out of the original engine it looks like the 3-piece goes above the single one which would be on the bottom. Any thoughts? Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted June 4, 2021 Report Posted June 4, 2021 follow the paperwork with the ring set....they maker provided this for guidance on install. Read careful identification of the ring as to orientation as to what side points up.....mostly this is a taper undercut, a square cut or could be identified by a slight dimple on side of the ring itself. Each maker has their own method....sometimes it mimics stock..sometimes not...the why for you must read the install sheet carefully. Quote
billrigsby Posted June 4, 2021 Author Report Posted June 4, 2021 I have read and re-read the included sheets, both only state 'oil rings' there are two styles. I understand how they go on the piston, but nothing states which location (3rd or 4th) either go. I'll send the manufacturer an email or call being Friday. Quote
Dave72dt Posted June 4, 2021 Report Posted June 4, 2021 If the way you have them laid out is exactly the way they came out of the box, I'd saw the 3 piece oil ring goes in the bottom groove. However, with your part number in hand, call the manufacturer's tech line. They can tell you the order they should be in. Mahle marks the tabs of the box, others place them in order in the package. billrigsby Posted June 4, 2021 Author Report Posted June 4, 2021 I sent Hastings an email, no phone support. ? They were just wrapped in the instruction sheets, four packages in a box, no semblance of order. Quote
chrysler1941 Posted June 4, 2021 Report Posted June 4, 2021 Dave72dt is correct. 3 piece bottom groove Quote
billrigsby Posted June 4, 2021 Author Report Posted June 4, 2021 Well that was a quick response..... That is the way the stock 48 engine piston looked to me. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 4, 2021 Report Posted June 4, 2021 your instruction included and as shown says this same thing as his e-mail... Quote

I picked up a complete set of 47-48 on eBay a year ago. They are fantastic and so easy to read. The more I work on the car, the more I understand when I go back and re-read them over time. 1 Quote
billrigsby Posted June 4, 2021 Author Report Posted June 4, 2021 Thanks, I have seen some of them, never knew where the complete set was. Quote
