Nomad50 Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Does any body know what the thread size is on a '47 Desoto steering wheel shaft? I have an 11/16"-18 die but that is too coarse. I have to repair the threads on the shaft end due to someone getting a little to mean with a puller in the past. I have a new old stock nut. Looks like it could be a 20 or 24 but I want to make sure. Thanks. Quote
Sniper Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 (edited) If you have a fastenal around take the nut there adn they should be able to tell you what size it is and get you a die for it. Or a thread file. https://www.toolsource.com/individual-c-194_199_201/external-thread-restorer-file-sae-1114-16-18-20-24-pitch-p-71148.html Edited May 26, 2021 by Sniper Quote
Solution Conn47D24 Posted May 26, 2021 Solution Report Posted May 26, 2021 46 47 48 Dodge parts book shows 5/8 ths - 18. I used this size die to clean up mine. Note: 7 pass and Limo used 3/4 -20 Possible Desoto is the same? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 26, 2021 Report Posted May 26, 2021 Idk if the thread is the same but I just fixed my 47 truck shaft by making a crude split die. I bought a nut the right size and cut it on half(I also had to make it thinner but that depends on how much good thread you have). Then put the two haves back together and work your way backwards towards the damaged thread. 1 1 Quote

I put on below the damage and tack welded both cuts. Used a hex die so turning it off with a wrench was easy. Edited May 26, 2021 by kencombs Quote
Nomad50 Posted May 26, 2021 Author Report Posted May 26, 2021 It was a 5/8" -18 thread on the Desoto. Thanks for the help. Quote

The slight gap I think gave a spot for gunk to escape Quote
