JeffR Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 I've been cleaning my fuel system. The carburetor has been rebuilt, new gas tank, new fuel filter. When I try to start the truck, how long should it take for the fuel pump to get gas to the carburetor?? Quote
ggdad1951 Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 it'll take a bit, did you prime things a little so you don't run your starter/battery down? Quote
JeffR Posted October 6, 2020 Author Report Posted October 6, 2020 I guess it is just spray fuel into the carb..... Quote
JBNeal Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 Priming just means to remove air from system and fill with fuel, so the glass bowls need to be filled for sure, as well as the carburetor (additional information - carb filling trick)...the fuel lines can then be purged by cranking on the starter...don't be surprised if you need to fill the bowls and carb up more than once Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 6, 2020 Report Posted October 6, 2020 you can gravity feed the carb from a small fuel tank by holding it higher than the carb...this should fill the fuel chamber and allow the float to shut off fuel intake. Once filled....hook up the fuel pump and lines as normal. It will start and run on the reserve in the carb. The fuel pump should suck fuel from the tank and while running on the carb bowl fuel....it should self bleed the system and when fuel reaches the carb..it will fill the bowl and again float will maintain proper fuel level from there. JeffR Posted October 6, 2020 Author Report Posted October 6, 2020 Great thanks, had not thought about filling the Carb bowl. Quote
Tooljunkie Posted October 7, 2020 Report Posted October 7, 2020 Some carbs have a bowl vent,i use a small bottle to fill them. Quote
JeffR Posted October 8, 2020 Author Report Posted October 8, 2020 The truck has not been started for 10 years. Would it be logical to assume the fuel pump will probably not function? Rebuild or replace? Quote
JBNeal Posted October 8, 2020 Report Posted October 8, 2020 10 years? Assume every piece of rubber that contacts gasoline will need replacement, from the fuel tank to the carburetor jet... Quote
JeffR Posted October 8, 2020 Author Report Posted October 8, 2020 I was thinking the same. Thanks for your input. Quote
JeffR Posted October 8, 2020 Author Report Posted October 8, 2020 How hard would it be to rebuild the fuel pump? Or is this something that I should just replace ? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 8, 2020 Report Posted October 8, 2020 it would be logical to test it....if found bad then rebuilt or replace as per availability and your level of involvement... Quote
