Went to a car show in Boron, Ca. yesterday and this example of what not to do to a 40 Dodge showed up in the parking area. It a V-6 with a Chevy turbo 350 and a 4X4 transfer case, a Chevy rear end and a GM trans axle front end. They must of used a ton of bondo on the body and then forgot to sand it before painting it. The rear doors were welded closed and they only wanted $3,500. firm for it, no dash or interior and the body was not attached to the frame.

You Know Dennis, this chop-job, could have been done with taste. It is a little unioque looking, would have not been to bad if done differently. Not what I would want to do, but could have some potential with the right person.............Fred

I spent the day at a large swap meet yesterday too. Had lots of cars for sale there. Was a nice 51 Dodge 4 door for about $8,000 (looked all original). However, there was also a 48 Plymouth Coupe for sale with a 440 under the hood. They were asking about $8,900 for it too. Outside was not bad, straight body and was in primer, ready for paint. However, look inside and that was a mess. Really cobbled up the dash. The looks of the dash would indicate to me there was other cobbled up stuff that I couldn't see.

Then I spotted a really sharp looking 53 Chevy Business Coupe about 100 feet away from those. Told my brother in law I had to go over to check that out. On the way he said something about the fact I had no room for it. Told him not to worry, if that Chevy was the right price and looked as good inside my Plymouth would be sold and the Chevy would be in the garage.:) Looked at the price on the window and it was only $5800. Upon opening the door it all went down the drain though. Not so much because the seats would need to be recovered and a new headliner installed, etc., that's easy stuff to fix. But....the floor was half gone and the guy had also tried to install a rear seat in it and cobbled it up there. But.........the outside paint job was great. Looks like someone just did a real nice quick paint job to make a quick buck. My guess is, he just coated the body with Por 15 and painted over it from the looks of the inside. Even the door sills were half rotted away, so you know the rockers would also need replacing. So.......guess I'll stick with my P15 coupe.

I've always been a big fan of " different ". I think someone had the right idea. Personally, I think I'd have chopped just a bit less in the rear...but all in all, I think it's got a look all it's own. I'd have like to seen a pic of the inside to see how much really needed to be straightened away there, but for $3500 in CA...I bet it sells...and fairly quickly. Another consideration is the fact that if the chopped top was done correctly, that can be worth the $3500 alone to a guy that hasn't got the experience or facility to do it himself. If all the mechanical is good to go, then actually $3500 is a deal, IMHO. Hey Dennis, where is Boron anyway?

I don't know if the body work is all that great on this car or not. Take a good look at the right front fender on the corner close to where the headlight should be. That looks like pretty rough body work and then painted over. Should be all smooth there. If they can't do a good job on a small spot like that, how well was the chopped top or other body work done?

this is what I would expect to see after an all night bender..somthing large and purple............

Word origin question? When was the word "bender" first used to indicate the activities of someone who sees something large and purple after an all nighter?

Hey guys...the message board "critic" here (one of them, at least)

giving my two cents. Bluntly put: it looks like crap! Whoever did this "hack" job must've had his eyes closed while doing it. Also, whoever did this apparently doesn't have respect for the car, and it shows. What a waste of what was once a good car.

splat1955, Boron is located on State Hwy 58 about 40 miles west of Barstow and is the home of U.S. Borax and the Twenty Mule Team Wagons.

shel_bizzy_48, Where they welded the rear doors they welded in a peace of flat stock, so the body lines stop and start on ecah side of the welded doors.

They have added about 2 inches in width to the front fenders and the top looked like a texured wall looks. The photo almost makes it look good but it was not, the paint hides the bad welds.

Not sure Don...however the wevbster dictionary bears out the term..just wondering if it has to do with BENDING over and praying to the porcilean god in the morning....is there an answer that you want to share???

Aw guys, now ya done got Darin riled up. That car might have been really rough, maybe not saveable, so the guy got out the bondo just for fun. But his choice of drivetrains tells me this is gonna be buying someone else's problem. Good grief, all wheel drive?

Norm,

That car can't be any worse than a car we saw for sale at the swap meet yesterday. Don't ask me what kind of car it started life as, none of the 4 of us could figure that one out (but was maybe a mixture of 30's & 40's something). Had a long open front end with some kind of grill in the front. The cab was some kind of sedan chopped off right behind the back seat, then the pickup box was only about 2 feet long. The open hood area did have a hood, just no sides. Hood ornament looked like some kind of home grown welded together. Hood was full of louvers as was the tail gate of the pickup box. Now, evidently this guy was really into louvers. The roof of the cab was also louvered.:D

Tim;

I do not have an answer. Am looking to further my word knowledge base to upgrade my retard status. Whoops I just said a no-no. Retard is not allowed. Mabye bending ones elbow has something to do with it.

I think that 'bender' comes from 'elbow bender' - i.e. the repetitive motion needed to hoist a few, ending up three sheets to the wind.

Now, where does the term "Three sheets to the wind" come from? Hint, it's from sailing.

is definitely contrary to what one would think...

The terms sheet is actually a rope...in sailing terms...

The term "three sheets to the wind", meaning "staggering drunk", refers to a ship whose sheets have come loose, causing the sails to flap uncontrolled and the ship to meander at the mercy of the elements.
