KurtisL Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 After soaking my replacement filter (Baldwin JC405) overnight in fresh oil, I packed it into the housing and screwed the lid tight. Upon initial engine startup, oil began leaking heavily despite the tightened lid and new rubber gasket. Am I supposed to bleed air out of the filter housing? How do I do that? Or is my lid just not tight enough? Seems to me I cannot get it any tighter. Thank you Mopar Sages. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 Lid is not sealing. Better remove it and inspect the gasket to be sure it didn’t slip out of place. Quote
Andydodge Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 Also you may have overtightened the lid........as Merle says remove, clean and thoroughly inspect the seal/gasket area........you may have cut the rubber seal or it might be bunching up or just needs a firm talking to...........lol.,........ain't old cars fun!.............lol................Welcome Aboard from Oztralia.....andyd Quote
Doug&Deb Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 It’s really easy for the gasket to slip out of place. I’ve made some real messes in my engine compartment because of it. A little gasket shellac should hold it in place while installing. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 My lid was leaking like yours . Over the years the lid had become dished down in the center and the clamping center was bottoming out before the lid got tight . A few well placed blows with a hammer got it to seal again . Quote
Robert5 Posted September 14, 2019 Report Posted September 14, 2019 Yes, the lid gasket is either slightly out of place or look very closely there may be an old really squished decayed gasket jammed into the groove in the lid and in effect it got double gasketed. Quote

This sounds exactly like a old valve cover that is leaking ... just tighten it up tighter and stop the leak. The cure was to to do some hammer work to straighten it out. I would not be surprised if you were correct on this one. Quote
