Advice please on installing the steering arm to the steering box shaft.

Mine slide on about 1/3 up.  I didn't want to hammer it home.

Also, is it normal that the large nut that holds it is a very tight fit as well ?

Dodge shop manual is little help.  What is the best way to install this part ?

the pitman arm should be keyed...one way on only...it will need be pulled up a bit iwth the nut as it is a bit of interference fit...and yes there is quite a bit of torque on the nut...112-125 ft lb

Thanks PA.

I thought of tightening it up with the nut but I wanted to double-check to make sure I wasn't stripping the steering shaft. ?

with a castle nut with a minimum torque and a posted max torque it kinda goes like this.....tighten till minimum torque is reached...before or by the max torque value you should have the castled nut position in a manner the cotter pin will insert...

Conn, as Tim says it should only go on one way as the splines have a large locating spline that must be lined up on both the pitman shaft and pitman arm....also some setups do not have a castellated nut and cotter pin, rather they have a standard type of hex nut and a spring washer.......I've seen both types over the years................andyd

I thought the old Mopars back thru 1946 had a sector with four machined wide slots.....

four possibilities to install the pitman arm?

I always prick punch the parts so never a question.....it's saved my ass many times on different assembly of parts and definately speeds things up too.

Finally finished this Pitman Arm Installation.

Air gun  on the nut till snug.

Then torque wrench to 120lbs .

Thought the air gun had this close to torque.  Nope !

Several hard turns still, till the wrench clicked .

1 & 7/16th  socket is probably another  "one use " tool investment.

Check it off the list !
