Hi ?

With the old fuel sender the gauge went balistic at all times. From zero to full depending on the "position of the car" and back and foreword again. I have now installed a new sender. With the result that the movement is gone ? but the gauge only displays the state of full ? ? (would be great with local fuel prices, but certainly not realistic). The car is still 6Volt positive ground. As this is certainly not anything out of the ordinary - would love to receive your advice. thanks

sounds like the wire to the sender is constantly grounded....it may be pinched somewhere and grounding out....disconnect the wire to the sender and the gauge should go to empty if so, you need approx. 10 ohm on the wire when testing for "full" display so as to not overdrive the gauge.  You can simulate a half full by use of a +/- 45 ohm resistor to ground...look in your book....good test procedures there...

Two wire or single wire, new sender from what source?  Just put a new two wire in mine, the old sender had terminals marked 1  & 2, the new one, had no such markings.  I put the wires back on matching their original terminal positions.  It worked like yours, showing half full with a full tank.  I reversed the wires and it seems to be working.  I am approaching half full position and will likely refill n a day or so and note how much it takes to fil l it.  Then l will need to run it closer to empty to see how accurately it reflects what in the tank below half full.

my gauge recently quit working also.  I have/had a new sending unit from AB in it.  Worked great.  Tested it and at empty position it read 0 ohms and at full 14.7.  Switched in a NOS gauge and it barely moved.  Checked and rechecked while switching the car on and off of course.  Every time I turned it on it rose a bit higher.  I have a full tank and it's now reading just over full.  I think that it will work correctly eventually. Mine is a two wire unit.

One wire system. New sender from ebay. Not a good description I know.

Thomba did not mention in his post that his car is a P18 and thus a one wire unit......

True - thanks for updating that information for me ?

I am guessing you have a short in your wiring/ground problem.
