Dbolter Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 Hello I am coming up short finding a replacement radiator cap for my '38 Chrysler.... I know I am just not looking in the right place.... Nothing on eBay, and andy bernbaum doesn't carry it. One year only deal?/? Orderded one from Vintage American Parts, and it is not correct.... Any Thoughts Gentleman? Thanks ~dbolt Quote
busycoupe Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 (edited) Your cap appears pretty solid. Why don’t you clean it up on a wire wheel, paint It, and put a new gasket on it. It doesn’t have to hold pressure, the old cooling systems were’nt pressurized. Edited February 9, 2018 by busycoupe 1 1 Quote
desoto1939 Posted February 9, 2018 Report Posted February 9, 2018 (edited) You might need either a R-1 or R-2 cap. The r3 fits my 1939 Desoto. Start searching for R-1 or R-2 radiator caps on ebay 37 38 Chrysler Radiator Cap R1 R-1 New Vintage Norlipp (Exc Imperial) this is the current info on ebay $23.60 for the cap so now you can look for these in your local swap meets. Unfortunately, it's full of R-2's. Quote
Dbolter Posted February 10, 2018 Author Report Posted February 10, 2018 Thanks for the replies... I wasn't aware of the R1 thing. Have a sweet weekend! ~dbolt Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 10, 2018 Report Posted February 10, 2018 maybe not in your price range but definitely available https://www.ebay.com/itm/37-38-Chrysler-Dodge-DeSoto-NOS-NEW-Stant-EVRSEAL-UNDERHOOD-RADIATOR-CAP-R1/311129617980?hash=item4870c5363c:g:XvIAAOxyzy1ST6aC&vxp=mtr Quote
dpollo Posted February 11, 2018 Report Posted February 11, 2018 A fuel tank cap will fit. I used one on my 37 Plymouth until the correct cap came along. The jaws of the Plymouth fuel cap are not as wide. I think I used a Ford item. 1 Quote

I would wire wheel, then bead blast. Paint with Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, then Rustoleum black paint. Will look brand new for not much money. Don’t forget a new gasket. If no bead blaster is available, soak in vinegar after wire wheeling. Quote

It can be applied without a primer and the hammer finish disguise slight irregularities in the surface. I used black, but it comes in several colors. Quote
