Belt replacement

Im trying to replace the fan belt, but cant get the generator close enough to the engine to slip the belt on. Its about an inch shy. Also not sure if this is to be expected on this old of a car but there is so much oil caked up on oil pan and in between engine and generator.

Crankshaft pulley should have two flats to enable to to slip the fan off.

I'm trying to get the belt on the generator but can't get the generator to move any closer to the engine to get the belt on.

You have to loosen the nut that holds the braket on the stud that is used to hold the water pump on to the block. This will permit the braket to rotate back towards the waterpump and permit you to get enough slack or romm to slip the belt over the gen pulley then you adjust the  geneator unit so that you have the 1/4 slack inthe fan belt.

Or .....get a slightly larger belt.

Ya I loosened the bolt, but it looks like the generator is hitting the oil fill tube and not letting the generator go far enough to put the belt on.

Sure you have the right belt? How did you get the old one off?

If you still have the old one lay them together & check the length.

The old one is broke but it matched the new one, the bracket the generator slides on still has about 1/2 inch of space left. How hard is it to remove the fill tube?

Oil fill tube will twist out. It's held in by friction and grime.

You probably will want to clean the area first as grit can fall done into your oil pan from the exposed hole . Some of the oil fill tubes have a clamp that bolts to the block .

fill tube is an interference fit...odds are if you rock this out a bit at a time it will come free but you will have to swage it a bit on reinstall.  Suggest a good cleansing of tube and hole and a tad of silicone...just a thin wipe, no globs are necessary.   I could probably be enticed to tell  you how to get a chrome one...nah...not been that good of a day.....lol

the generator should not hit the filltube you should beable to loosen the nut that holds the braket at the water pump then loosen the bolt that threads thru the front of the generator. When these are both loose then the bracket will pivot and then the geneartor will pivot. You might also have to loosen the two bottom bolts that hold the generator onto the lower bracket that mounts to the engine block. Look at the mounting and then try these suggestions.  If you have the correct lenght belt it will go on without much trouble. Bingster also had an issue in another thread and look at this old tread.
