I need help with the engine rebuild.  Would much appreciate any insight/advice.  I pull the engine with tranny attached and delivered it to a machine shop for a complete rebuild.  I was absent for any disassembly. Basically I got back a completely rebuilt short block and boxes of loose nuts, bolts and parts. The factory service manual I have does not include many details I need.

I need advise on:

  • oil cross over pipe and oil pickup orientation
  • oil pan gasket and seal install details
  • intake/exhaust manifold re-installation tips
  • heat riser valve setup
  • clutch/pressure plate/release bearing/release fork/fork boot installation
  • books/literature which provides this info
  • etc.

Thanks  in advance for any assistance

It would probably help if you told people where you live.

The Mopar 1950 Parts book is the best parts and of orientations of parts illustrations that I have found for these years. Covers the D33 and D34 models for your perusal.

They are avail. on ebay or other sources by searching-1950 mopar parts book. Usually about 50-60 bucks. Well worth it if you do not know these well.

Happy hunting!

the advice you would have gotten before you took it in would have been to take lots of pictures. too late now.  a good source now would be to find any other cars like yours and take pictures of how the running engine is put together.most of what you need to do now is not that complicated. I have many manuals as do other members. just ask and you shall receive.    capt den

while I cannot speak for the Dodge factory manual. the Plymouth manual for the same year has illustration of the cross over tube, oil pick up and skimmer......the illustrated parts breakdown at front of engine section shows an exploded view that should also help

The  cross over pipe must be installed in such a way so the pipe will not be struck by the crankshaft counterweight.

This is easy to do on a 201 since it only interferes lightly, but enough to make a terrible clatter.  As for the 230 I recall that interference is quite obvious if the pipe is installed backward.   The float is centered by lining its pipe up with the rear main's (camshaft-side)  bolt.  This is indicated in most service manuals.

On the pan gasket, do not trim the end pieces.  there are longer pan rail bolts for the ends where the pan flange has reinforcement.

Check the pan for bolt holes which have been stretched and repair if necessary with a hammer and dolly.
