Truck one of them is going into is a 47 dodge half ton with a 218 and a 3.55. Gear sets are: 4.03 2.37 1.49 1.00 0.76 3.78 2.18 1.42 1.00 0.72 and the stock one for comparison 3.3 1.78 and 1.00. Plymouthy Adams Posted December 17, 2016 Report Share Posted December 17, 2016 math has been delivered to you in PM form...long read, covers many scenarios...based on what you have for rear gear...what you have available for tranny gear ratio...I call for the 4.03 as it will give you a tad better pull in OD which is where you will be overall.....might just make a difference in if or if not have to shift on light grade/load conditions, OD is going to be a bit on the light side.....first and second both will be a tad short but will make that truck stand up like a truck with the flathead and most loads you place in it...third is going to be for playing and I think you going to like that for certain..can hold long and pull up nicely to highway speeds..the real answer is how you going to use the truck. I have my doubts as to how often the OD of either tranny is going to get used. I think it is going to depend on what the height of your tire selection is. With a 3.55 and 29" high tires the engine speed and noise level in my truck is just fine at 65mph in 4th. What would be nice is to have this spread below 1/1 .......particularly 2nd and 3rd which basically straddles my 3rd gear ratio. With a 3.55 and this height tire the jump from 3rd to 4th on my stand transmission is not optimum. Jeff Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Young Ed Posted December 17, 2016 Author Report Share Posted December 17, 2016 My 48 coupe has a R10 overdrive 3.73 gear and 27" tires and that one uses the overdrive well. NiftyFifty Posted December 19, 2016 Report Share Posted December 19, 2016 Not all T5's will fit the trucks either tho, so you have to find the ones with the correct shifter location, or your going to lose your bench seat and seat support. I believe all the mustang and Camaro/Firebird had the rear shifter, so they won't work, sadly as some of those were the beefier of the trans.
