I just installed a Bosch water temp gage since the factory unit wasn't working. I want to get the old temp gage bulb and line out of the way. The bulb and nut is too large to feed back through the hole in the firewall. Any reason to nut just cut the line? I mean, are these repairable? I don't want to waste it if it isn't necessary. Thanks

That "line" is actually a tube and cutting it will release the working fluid (ether) and really and truly render the gauge inoperative without significant effort.

As the bulb, nut and line came permanently attached to the gauge head unit, there must be a way to get it through the firewall.

remove the entire rubber insert and collar.....rubber is slit....collar is hinged

Yup, I have that removed but couldn't get the nut and bulb through. I'll try it again.

Removing the clamp & grommet on my 49 revealed quite a big hole to pass things through(??) Sounds like you're also lucky to have gotten the bulb out of the block in one piece. Mine wouldn't budge. Does the new gauge go in the same spot?

Yes. Here is what I installed. Bosch SP0F000053 Style Line 2" Mechanical Water/Oil Temperature Gauge (Black Dial Face, Black Bezel) Got it on Amazon. Works great. It came with several sized fittings, one of which fit the block. Ran the line through the firewall where the original goes through and mounted the gage under the dash. It also includes a 12v light bulb and wiring if you want to use it.

This might or might not help.

The plug that goes into the block won't fit through here on my car. Especially with the other lines coming through. Not a big deal at this point but just wondering if I should just cut it off since it isn't working anyway. Are these things repairable or does the line just get replaced?

Do you still have the adapter fitting connected? If it's just the gland nut and temperature bulb it should fit through.

Maybe that is what it is. I'll have to take another look at it.

Thanks Guys!

The gauge can be repaired if the cause of failure is the loss of internal gas due to a break in the capillary or bulb. If you clip the capillary tube, do it nearest the bulb as you can. We regularly repair these for customers all over the world. Send me a private message if you like to have your old unit repaired.
