Don Coatney Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 Many years ago on a visit to the Auburn, Cord, Dusenburg museum I learned of a major engineering flaw with the 1930's era Dusenburg. The distance between the steering wheel and the corner of the dashboard was way too close for a hand to grip the wheel and turn at the same time. Fast forward to 1946. Today in Indiana it is a hot 90 degrees with high humidity. I elected to take my D-24 for a drive using the window wing air conditioner. First corner I raked my hand on the vent window. I did not learn anything and had to rake my hand two more times before I l got smart. I don't recall having that problem on my P-15. Live and learn. Quote
Reg Evans Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 What's that distance on your Plymouth ? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 that why you got two black eyes...you ignored Lisa's first warning... with my modification to the Ply Bz Cp I was concerned on the left side clearance also...I do have not issue with vent that I can recall but then I truly do not recall measuring that....but I am a bit closer to the door with my wheel. (2004 Dodge firewall install) With power R&P however I do not think I will have issue here with steering and clearance...but I did change my window cranks to a bit shorter throw due to lower dash mods also...always something... DJ194950 Posted August 10, 2016 Report Posted August 10, 2016 Guess you will just have to to keep the AC on Medium or Low to have clearances needed! DJ 1 Quote

DJ Or get actual AC and keep them windows and vent shut tight.....but if you are known for certain hand signals I can see where this will never work out.... 1 Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 10, 2016 Author Report Posted August 10, 2016 I used certain hand signals on my self when this discovery was made and they work irrelevant of AC setting Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 Your hands look like they bruise easily , mine are the same . I think it is because of thin skin . Sometimes I bruise mine without even knowing how it happened . When doing mechanical work I wear gloves with the finger tips cut off so I still have my sense of touch . 1 Quote
50 Dodge Lug Nut Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 Perhaps the "problem" is not so much a design fault, but Mother MOPAR's attempt at an anti-theft device. The alleged thief could be identified with bruises to his or her left hand. Quote
desoto1939 Posted August 14, 2016 Report Posted August 14, 2016 Hey Don: I just went pout and measures the distance when the vent window is open all the way on the driver side on my 39 Desoto. The distance from the end of the frame to the steering wheel is approx. 3 1/2 inches. I also put my hands around the steering wheel at the same point and I have approx. 2 inches of clearance when the vent window is fully extended to the end of my knuckles.. Rich Hartung Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 14, 2016 Author Report Posted August 14, 2016 Big difference in the vent wing size. First picture P-15, second picture D-24. Quote
steveplym Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Everything is bigger on the D-24. Quote
