When I bought the truck it had no speedometer cable, but had speedometer.  I have pulled the engine and transmission to clean up and recondition.  I cant seem to notice where the speedometer cable bolts into transmission.  If anyone can take a picture that would be great.

Will the Ford cable fit, I find it hard to believe that back in the day, these parts weren't standard.

Would depend on the size of the square drive on either end of the cable.

I should have one down the shed so will see if I can measure it for you tomorrow (close to midnight in Oz as I type now).

Check out this thread JPP... http://p15-d24.com/topic/29424-speedo-cable-tranny-end/?hl=%2Bspeedo+%2Bcable ... as we have spoken about speedo cables a few times over the past few years - that thread mentions that you can get a Jeep one which will fit.

The 'search' toolbar to the top right of your screen can prove very handy when looking for information on something specific.

as a note on search to new members...you must be at top of forum to get a return...you should not use it within an open thread..

Or old stupid members, such as myself.....I had no idea that's how the search function works. No wonder mine come up blank most of the time.

what was the length, As i have nothing to compare it to.  Thanks

i'm using a speedo cable in my b-1-f that i had as a spare from my 75 cj-5.  most part stores should be able to hook you up on that.

or, try 4wd.com or quadratec.com, both specialize in jeep parts and probably carry the cable (you can probably look it up on either website to determine cost).  i've used both vendors many times over the years to keep my cj on the road.

I measured the speedo cable from my 53 truck from end to end (of the outer case) and came up with a measurement of 4 ft 6. The square drive on the end of the inner cable measured 0.102 inches on the digital caliper.

I was a little disappointed to find that the end of my inner cable (on the gearbox end) was trashed - I guess I'll have to see if I can get a good one from one of the other trucks!

me too. So I crawled under the truck and taped the tape measure to the tranny. Picked a route and measured up to the hole in the firewall. Then went in the cab and measured from the hole to the spot in the dash.

I have got a lot of great advice on this forum but I still find it good to check.
