jcmiller Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 Is the device on the right an automatic choke? What is the function of the parts circled on the left? There is a rubber or plastic ball in the brass fitting between the tube and the manifold. Thanks, Jeff Quote
Young Ed Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 yes thats a choke the other is typically the vacuum wiper supply Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 That is the choke and is the 1949-50 style choke. Not the same as a 1946-48 Chrysler Eight. The pipe to the left is the vacuum suppy line with a check valve for the frame mounted Kelsey Hayes power brake booster unit. Quote
jcmiller Posted September 8, 2015 Author Report Posted September 8, 2015 Thank you both. From looking at the 46-48 manual, it looks like the booster brake was only used on the Crown Imperial, and not on the New Yorkers. For a 1946-48 New Yorker, would the hole in the manifold to supply vacuum be plugged, supply vacuum to something else, or not exist at all? This is a 1950 engine, but I want to make it as close to a 1946 as possible, even though I know the casting is a little different. I have to say, the 1946-48 manual, or at least the one I have, is not very helpful compared to the manual for my '42 Plymouth. Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) Jeff, You are correct in that the 1946-8 Chrysler Saratogas and NewYorkers did not have a brake booster... only the super rare Crown Imperial LWB cars. The intake manifold on 1946 through 1948 use a 2BBL intake. The 1946 through early 1947 chrysler eight cars use a Stromberg 2BBL AAV carburetor. Later 1947 thru 1948 chrysler eights use a 2BBL to 1BBL adapter.... installed on the 2BBL intake as chrysler went to the Carter E7A1 1BBL carburetor to the end of 1948. Both the front and rear 3/8" vacuum fittings are plugged on the intake excepth for 2BBL cars which use a vacuum controlled throttle guard. The 1946-48 eight intake also has two tapped holes on a raised boss at the rear of the manifold to mount the throttle linkage bracket to. So you do need the proper intake manifold for a 1946-8 chrysler not the later 49-50 style as they don't interchange. Edited September 8, 2015 by Dodgeb4ya Quote
jcmiller Posted September 8, 2015 Author Report Posted September 8, 2015 I've got the Carter 1 barrel. It came with the adapter, but the 1950 manifold has just the two holes. I've not checked to see if it fits yet. Fingers crossed. The manifold also lacks a second vacuum fitting. I think it does have the raised boss you mentioned. I really appreciate the info and the pics. I had some good pics of the other side of one of your engines, but not the manifold side. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) Yes I see the pad on one of my 1950 engines... missed on that one! Carb base height needs to be checked.. shown are pics of a 1948 engine and a 1950 engine showing approx carb base heights compared to choke mount pad.. All else looks good. The 1BBL heat shield is odd...I have only seen them on 2BBL cars including my 3 pass cpe. Some pics... Edited September 8, 2015 by Dodgeb4ya 1 Quote
jcmiller Posted September 9, 2015 Author Report Posted September 9, 2015 Thanks Bob. I'll keep that height issue in mind as I proceed. Perhaps it won't be a problem if I use the 1950 choke setup. Again, thanks for all the help and for the pictures. That first one cleared up another question I had about the fan. Mine is not symmetric and I wasn't sure if it was design or damage, but it appears to be design. Jeff Quote
Ulu Posted September 9, 2015 Report Posted September 9, 2015 So, Dodgeb4ya, Why is there one odd slotted screw on the timing chain cover? Is that a bleed hole or something? Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted September 10, 2015 Report Posted September 10, 2015 Clearance for the rubber motor mount.... Quote
