Plymouthy Adams Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) moving front to rear, just before the tip up...do not confuse by going to the rear of the tip up..usually the rear number that is inside the frame rail and rearward and will be the part number not the ID number... Edited February 17, 2015 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
rustytrusty47 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 so your saying its on the back side? not facing out? very confusing indeed. Quote
Seaside Pete Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 No I think PA is saying the number on the inside of the frame is the part number not the ID number. I think the ID number is going from front to back on the outside of the frame just before the frame kicks up to go over the axle. Pete Quote
rustytrusty47 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Report Posted February 17, 2015 Facing Out #1 ________________________________________________________________________________ Facing out #2 ________________________________________________________________________________ Looking outward from under car ( Left/Drivers side frame rail ) wire brush ready in hand, where is the sweet spot? DonaldSmith Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 Do any of you have a photo of your frame with the VIN (or serial number) revealed? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 I know that number is there......on the outside facing part of the frame.......in an area ahead of the rear wheel.......because I found it at one time. It took a bit of wire brushing for it to show up as it is indented into the metal, therefore filled with crud. At the time, I took a couple pictures......but can't now find them. I think I even measured from somewhere....... That number would be the same as the one on your original engine in the car........example, mine began with "P15" followed by the other numbers. If I can find a picture I will post it. Quote
DJ194950 Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 My on 50 Ply. behind the rear axle kickup. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 On my one car it is just at the kick up ..on the one that is very easy to look at at the moment in the shop..at the top of the kick up...search this area good is best advice anyone can give...it should be there.. Quote
_shel_ny Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 You may find it to match the # of the original engine. From past readings here I don't think it matches the serial # on the door pillar. some pics: post #10: http://p15-d24.com/topic/37518-vehicle-id-information-needed-41-plymouth/?hl=%2Bserial+%2Bnumber#entry389569 post 26: http://p15-d24.com/topic/36767-vin-problems/page-2?hl=+serial%20+number post 19: http://p15-d24.com/topic/34734-1940-dodge-chassisserial-number-where-is-it/?hl=%20serial%20%20number Quote
wayfarer Posted February 18, 2015 Report Posted February 18, 2015 ...curious about this topic... I have 2-1947 DeSotos and 1-1950 Chrysler and all three use the door pillar number as the ID on the titles. Is this a state by state variation or just a jumble due to age and the fact that some states didn't even issue titles back then?? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Over the years it seems to have become a "states choice". Younger people working at BMV's are only familiar with VIN numbers on the dash and the "old" serial numbers on the door jamb. Its not likely that any employee there, under the age of fifty has ever heard of registering by motor number. Or even chassis number. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted February 19, 2015 Report Posted February 19, 2015 Today I went out to the garage and looked at the frame...........found the number to the rear of the left rear tire, and 6 inches in front of the gas tank filler neck. Toward the top edge of the frame, just below where the fender joins the body. I rubbed some chalk on the numbers so they would show up a bit better. 1 Quote

LFT_QBA_1980 Posted February 20, 2015 Report Posted February 20, 2015 (edited) I did not scratch off anything but I did find this number on my 48 Plymouth same place rear Driver side. LP15L I am going to have to do some scraping. LFT Edited February 20, 2015 by LFT_QBA_1980 Quote
deathbound Posted February 20, 2015 Report Posted February 20, 2015 I did not scratch off anything but I did find this number on my 48 Plymouth same place rear Driver side. LP15L I am going to have to do some scraping. LFT I think that is the part# of the frame/rail. If the engine is original to your frame/car, it should be the same#, minus the model#....ie:P15, etc. Quote
