bluefoxamazone Posted January 17, 2015 Report Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) hello!!! I am considering to replacing the diagonal 6.7 X 15 tires to a radial tyre (with "vintage" look if possible) What could you recommend? is a 205/75/15 the right choice and what brand is good? The car is driven occasionally and only in good weather? thanks for sharing the experience! Franky Edited January 17, 2015 by bluefoxamazone Quote
greg g Posted January 17, 2015 Report Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) 205 75 are a bit short and make the speedometer read faster than actual road speed by 8 to 10 mph. I have 215 75 on mine and they are about 4 mph slower than indicated. The original tires had a diameter of 28 3/4 inch give or take so find something that has a mounted diameter as close as possible. depending on brand 205 75 15 run 27.1 inches 215 75 are 27.8 225 75 are 28.3 So the 225 are best choice for diameter but they no longer have the appearence of a vintage tire and may not fit in the wheel wells without some rubbing. My 215's rub a bit around corners with typical road trip stuff int he trunk and a full tank. Edited January 20, 2015 by greg g 1 Quote
bluefoxamazone Posted January 18, 2015 Author Report Posted January 18, 2015 ok thanks Greg! I do not care to much about a correct reading on the odometer. So, does anybody has a recommendation to make for a new "vintage look" tire that does not look like a SUV / off road tire? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) It's possible to get a ratio changer for the speedometer cable, to adjust the speedometer to the tire diameter. The commercial units, as used for police cars, have a vast number of ratios available, by swapping out gears. Of course, each set of gears costs money, and an entire set for a maintenance garage would be the very expensive. I got a ratio changer on line that changed the speed reading by predetermined 10 percent. 10 percent plus or minus, I don't remember. I cobbled my floor to fit the cable in place with the ratio changer attached to the transmission, but since learned that I could have used a short cable at the transmission to get the ratio changer out of the way. As the man of mixed sayings said, "Live and let learn." (And why do I keep typing it "ration"? ratio ...ration.. (darn it) ... ratio ... ratio ... And how many typos do I find when I edit this?) Plymouthy Adams Posted January 18, 2015 Report Posted January 18, 2015 there are very few typo's that are not understood here when the person is well verse in describing a situation or procedure Quote
bluefoxamazone Posted January 20, 2015 Author Report Posted January 20, 2015 like I said: I do not care to much about a correct reading on the odometer. So, does anybody has a recommendation to make for a new "vintage look" tire that does not look like a SUV / off road tire? Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 20, 2015 Report Posted January 20, 2015 Did you Google "radial tires that look like bias ply" ? Do so and you will get several hits. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 21, 2015 Report Posted January 21, 2015 Coker is now selling a radial tire that looks like a bias ply. 2 3/4" wide white. Link to the ad: https://www.cokertire.com/coker-classic-nostalgia-radial.html I have thought about a set of those...........just can't make up my mind. About $250 per tire. Would like to hear reports from others who have tried them to see what they think of them. I could pick up a set at this year's Hershey meet and avoid shipping cost. Need to save my pennies I guess................... Quote
greg g Posted January 21, 2015 Report Posted January 21, 2015 Bob send Mark Aubuchon a PM regarding his experience with the Cokers. Quote
