Bingster Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 I just got some NOS bearing cups inner and outer for my '47 Desoto. Does it matter if I use new bearings (Rock Auto, etc.) with these, or do you have to use the cups provided for the new bearings? Quote
soth122003 Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 If you NOS cups are leather and in good condition, use a little grease to condition the leather and use them. If they are rubber, I would use the ones that came with the bearings. Quote
DJ194950 Posted August 18, 2014 Report Posted August 18, 2014 (edited) I'd use the set especially if of unknown origin. Why not get the #'s off the old bearings and go to your local bearing store, there seems to be some almost everywhere. Buy some bearings only of known origin and you should have No problems using your nos parts. These #'s almost always cross to something used in many apps. Bearing are the one of very few that can be easily crossed over! Made an assumption you were referring to bearing Races. If your talking about something else, disregard. Good luck, DJ Edited August 18, 2014 by DJ194950 Quote
ptwothree Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Cups (race) and bearing new or old should always be used in matching pairs. Mixing old races with new bearing or vice-versa is asking for trouble. 2 Quote
Bingster Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 Right. The races. The comment about the leather I believe is for the bearing dust seals, which I also got NOS. In fact, the service manual says to moisten the leather inside the seal with some oil and run a rounded object around the leather until it is flattened out. The leather ibn my NOS dust seals is pointed like a pyramid, and I assume this is what you flatten down. Quote
DJ194950 Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Never suggested using an old race with new bearings I Thought. Believe that he said he had New nos races and was only needing new bearings to match. Myself I'd certainly want to use a quality brand of new bearings And races in a set myself. Would never ever use new with old! I'm confused? Maybe! DJ Quote
Don Coatney Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Use the correct terminology. Cone is the bearing, Cup is pressed into the hub. Buy American (Timken) and always use a matched cup and cone. Don't be fooled by the fake off shore stuff. 3 Quote
Bingster Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 Well, I have the races in original Mopar red & yellow boxes. Wrapped inside, even! Quote
Dave72dt Posted August 19, 2014 Report Posted August 19, 2014 Thorough inspection before installing. Just because they're wrapped doesn't mean they are still in pristine condition after all these years. Quote
Bingster Posted August 19, 2014 Author Report Posted August 19, 2014 They look in fine shape. Even say TIMKEN with a part number. Quote
