Oil bath air cleaner mod

Here is a little write up on my mod for an oil bath air cleaner, going to a paper filter element. While the oil bath system I assume works, I thought it would be better for a paper element. Said and done.....the oil bath system is cheaper to operate as the paper filter was $22

Drill out the spot welds in the lid and pry off the metal filter piece. I used aircraft rivets to fill the spot weld holes. You could weld the holes up and grind smooth or use screws but I would recommend locking nuts.

The element seal surface will ride on these rivets but they are bucked heavy (flat) so if using screws use the smallest you can find. The elements have a rubber or plastic seal that will conform when the lid is installed.

The filter I have currently installed is NAPA #2444 as you can see by the photos I think it should be a little taller. The 2444 is 3" high.

I would next try a NAPA# 9227 with dimensions of 6.6" od, 5.1" id and about 3.4" tall.

Or a NAPA# 6070, dimensions of 7" od, 4.2" id about 3.5" high.

Or NAPA# 2221, dimensions of 6.0" od, 4.5" id and I think 3.6" tall

The diameter fits nice on the edge of the oil lip. These filters all have a rubber or plastic edge to seal upper and lower.

I don't like the lid sitting like this but until I try a taller element.......

I am not sure this puts the lid high enough to feed the 100 horsepower torque monster, I would try another 1/2" taller element next.

Great modification, Thanks for the NAPA air cleaner element numbers. I am converting mine and those #'s will come in handy.

i have a a paper napa gold air filter installed in my 1939 Desoto and i do not see any performance issues.  i have had this in the car for over 10 years. The one that i got is a perfect fit and is tall enough and requires no modifications.

I do not think it runs any better with a paper element, and really an oil bath one is still functional. I do have a spare original oil bath style but still have this paper set up. No issues.
