Last autumn I was driving home with my 55 at night. Had on the lights and fan to defog and wiper for rain. After 45 minutes I could see the fuel gauge running back quickly. I wondered if I was loosing fuel? Then I figured it our, the battery was drained more then the gen put in (didn't look at the amp meter!). Turned the fan off to check and the fuel gauge indicated more fuel!

When I checked later at home I discovered my regulator should give about 45 amps according to the service manual but the one in the car only does 35 amps.

I cannot find a regulator that does 45 amps.

Is there a trick to let the regulator give more amps? (if I add up the amps drawn: coil 5A, headlights 2x7,5A, taillights 2x 0,5A, licensplate 2x 0,5A, instruments 3x 0,3A, wiper 15A, fan 8A=45,9 amps

The other way to go could be LED headlights. Does anyone know if they are available in 6V?

Thanks, Edwin.

Amperage is determined by the generator. Regulator keeps the voltage at acceptable levels. A good generator shop should be able to rewind the gen for more output. Make sure your wiring is in good shape and connections are clean and tight. If you are willing to take the step into LED lighting, maybe it's time to take the step to 12 volts and put this issue behind you for good.....

Here is a place that deals in 6 volt bulbs for cars and trucks. See if this helps you.

First thing would is go through your current circuits to assure all conections are clean, tight and properly grounded. If you do not have a body to frame or engine ground wire install one. Your car was designed to assure proper functioning of accesories when running at night. Sure running the fan on high with the radio on,with highbeams and electric wipers willput it near the edge of the design envelope, but 60 years of corrosion, loose connections and iffy grounds, are probably adding enough extra resistancd to puut it over the edge with everything on. Make sure all is good before replacing parts.

Thanks for all your reply's. I rewired the complet car about 10 years ago. Even put in thicker wires. That did make this car more relayable. Also I made sure all current goes through wires, not the body, but the lights have been dimm always. Because I want to stay to 6V I thought go to LED head lights.

I'll check if it the light will be bright enough if when I run a wire direct from the battery to the lights. If so, perhaps install a relay to switch on the lights and not the switch on the dashboard.

When I find a solution I'll let you know.

Until now I did not find any solution, however webshop in my contry is working on solutions for this. They have LED headhight bulbs, but the voltage range in from 6 to 12V.  The light is a bit dim at 6V but should be much better then a halogene 6V bulb. I haven't tried it yet. next the link to his site. sorry it is in dutch but you can contact him in english. https://www.harrieabc.nl/H4-led-DC-6-12-volt-600-1200-watt
