omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Hey everyone. Im new here. I just purchased a 1938 Chrysler Royal. I am here to possibly get some help in parts sourcing and getting some good info on this car. The main parts I know for a fact I need body wise are a drivers fender and trunk.... the rest will come later but I feel those by far will be the hardest to source out. Not to sure how to post pics here yet but ill figure it out. Edited May 6, 2014 by omiotek 1 Quote
Ricky Luke Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Welcome from Australia. I've got a 1940 Royal - slightly different to the USA body. Good bunch of people here. There's a few Chrysler owners that should be able to help. If you put your pics on Flickr or dropbox, copy the pics URL. go to t he bottom and look at the "Reply to this topic" box. There's a little picture under the smiley face. Click on that and and paste the URL into the box. See how you go.. Rick Quote
omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 thanks for the reply!!!! cool royal!!!!!!! haven't really seen much of the 40s ones. This was totally an impulse buy for me. I figured it out hahaha. just needed some resizing. Quote
Ricky Luke Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) That's nice. Mine needs a bit more work than yours Rick Edited May 6, 2014 by Ricky Luke Quote
HughForrest Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Welcome to the group. Another '38 Royal owner here. Mine is the convertible coupe. Looks like you have original headlights- not sealed beams. If you get around to taking them apart please take lots of pics. I'm going from a sealed beam conversion back to original style, and am not sure what goes where and which pieces I'm still missing. omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 thanks for the replies guys....... the car seems pretty original. I will definitely take some pics for you if I take them apart..... its a major debate im in taking them apart. post some pics up of yours id love to see it. Quote
RobertKB Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Hi and welcome to the forum. I also have a '38 Chrysler Royal 4-Door Touring Sedan and it did not look as nice as yours when I started. I have added a before and after picture. Mine had seal beam headlights when I got it but as you can see I have gone back to the original headlights which I think look way nicer. I do not have the parts you mentioned but I do have a few extra other parts. Edited May 6, 2014 by RobertKB 2 Quote
builtfercomfort Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 Your fender looks quite repairable. If it's not full of hidden damage, it's probably easier to fix it than source a new one. What's wrong with it and the trunk? Quote
omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) Robert. thanks for the compliments. your car looks amazing and i would love to see more pics. what do you have left because i do need other things but those are just the major things i feel will be the hardest to find. the only other thing i noticed missing from the car is the foglight assemblies and brackets. also were you able to find the rubber for the step boards? builtforcomfort - the fender has a large dent in it. its rather hard to get in the pictures. i didnt even see it until i saw the car in person. the minor dent to the right is very easily fixable. the trunk on the other hand has quite a bit of rott on the inner skin which is transfering through to the outer skin. the inner skin which i can fix if its 100% neccisary but fixing inner skins is not my favorite thing to do so i want to save myself a headache and try to find a trunk with a little less rot. Robert Horne Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 My trunk lids on my 37s had problems with the inner having rust going to the outer skin. I use an acid type of treatment to get the rust under control, before doing the repairs.... The drain holes get closed up and hold water.... Quote
omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 That's what I was thinking. What's your treatment method Quote
RobertKB Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) I agree about the fender being repairable and easier than looking for a new one. Trunk lids from '37, '38, and I believe '39 Chrylsers, Desotos, Dodges should all fit. I believe it is true of Plymouth as well. They all shared the same body from the firewall back. It is repairable as well if you cannot find a better one. If you need other parts just email or PM me as it is easier to work that way. I included pics of my interior before and after. Looks like your is original and not in bad shape. Mine was original, too, but as you can see not in good shape. The flash in the second picture makes the interior look a lighter colour than it actually is as it is quite a dark burgundy. I did not go with original style material as I preferred the burgundy and grey with the black exterior. The fog lights and brackets did not come with these cars and are aftermarket add ons. I use them as signal lights. Edited May 6, 2014 by RobertKB 1 Quote
omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 The burgandy looks amazing....that's my plan with this car as well. Black cherry(black with red pearl) fenders and step boards with a tri stage maroon for the rest of the body and black chrome trim. I will pm you. The dogs I'm curious about because there's wiring hanging there where it looks like dogs were but the lights aren't thetr Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 nice car...hard to find them like this anymore...welcome and it was great to see you in actively participating in chat already this morning... Quote

HughForrest Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I need some new pics, but here's mine: 2 Quote
RobertKB Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) A few more before and after pics. Car had no motor when I got it and the front end had sat off the car for years. Dash was rough and I had to find all new gauges for it. It takes a lot of work but as Tim says, "You can eat an elephant one bite at a time". Just pick small projects to work on one at a time and never think of the whole project. Each project gives you a sense of satisfaction and before long you see major progress. Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 (edited) I was with you right up to the 8-ball Edited May 6, 2014 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 How come nobody has a 16 ball shifter knob? That would be unique. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 How come nobody has a 16 ball shifter knob? That would be unique. Would that be twice as good? Some should probably have a 4 ball shift knob because their set up is half @$$ed. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 7 ball as a solid would have matched..the 15 being two tone would have matched even better.. Quote
RobertKB Posted May 6, 2014 Report Posted May 6, 2014 I was with you right up to the 8-ball Couldn't find an original shifter knob. They are very different from Plymouths and Dodges and kind of match the steering wheel. I like pool so hence the 8-Ball. Tim, if you ever come to visit, and you are welcome any time but you do not have to drive the '38 as I would not want to damage your sensibilities. Quote
omiotek Posted May 6, 2014 Author Report Posted May 6, 2014 I think a white ball shift knob would look a bit better in there but your car looks great man. Our first plan of attack is to get it running and go from there. I agree taking thingd one project st a time is the way to go with no getting overwhelmed Quote
