jeffr777
Hello from another new member, I recently acquired a '50 Special Deluxe and I'm not sure how to remove the top from the assembly that holds the oil filter (picture is of the top of the filter assembly). The bolt on top can be loosened and raised about 3/4 of an inch, but I'm not sure how to remove the orange top cover. I'm also not certain if this is original equipment or an aftermarket assembly. Many thanks in advance for your assistance. JR
Solution Niel Hoback Posted December 22, 2013 Solution Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 That big nut holds the cover on, but it doesn't come out of the cover. Once the nut is loose, the cover will come off, but it will need help. Its just stuck. When you get a new filter, (get the number off the top of the old element), and make sure you get two new gaskets with it. The cover gasket and the bottom of the filter gasket. The top cover has to be sealed perfectly and quite tight or it will leak.
Merle Coggins
Keep turning that center bolt. The cover may be stuck by the gasket. As you loosen the bolt it should lift the cover off the gasket. Maybe give the edge of the cover a tap as you loosen the bolt. Merle
Don Coatney
As mentioned it will screw off. Where in Ohio are you located?

greg g
common replacement is a NAPA 1080 or 1080G or other brands that cross over to that number. Save the lid gasket for reference as there are a couple different styles.
Young Ed
common replacement is a NAPA 1080 or 1080G or other brands that cross over to that number. Save the lid gasket for reference as there are a couple different styles. I was using napa 1080s but have switched to a napa 1010 due to the better construction of the center. The 1010 has rubber gaskets the 1080 just a fiber piece with a hole in it.
50 Dodge Lug Nut
You'll also need to use your wife's or g.f.'s new turkey baster to get the remaining oil from the bottom of the filter housing.
jeffr777
Thanks again, all. Got the cover off this morning, replaced with a NAPA 1010 and saved the gasket. Tried to smuggle the turkey baster out of the kitchen but was caught red handed By the way, everyone gave extremely helpful information - thank you again and they were all "best answers" in my book. _shel_ny
Mine had a drain, but the first oil change, nothing came out of the drain. The oil was like chocolate pudding. Scooped it out by hand. Edited December 22, 2013 by shel_ny
Don Coatney
I added a petcock to my Desoto engine full flow filter. My original Plymouth engine by-pass filter had a drain hole.
