Fan belt width?

When did they switch from the wide belt to a narrower belt? My truck has the wider belt. This afternoon I installed the generator that I got from Jeff and realized that it has the narrower pulley. Since I don't have my other genny here, it is still at the shop, I couldn't swap pulleys. The wide belt rides right at the top of the pulley groove but it still works for now. It's not right and I won't be putting a lot of miles on it this way, but it'll work for now until I can get my original generator back, or find a different pulley for this one. At least the truck is mobile again for the party.

Thanks again Jeff. You're a good friend to have.

not sure the year..not sure any one division of model made the change before another..I have found the marrow belt on 50 model Dodges..also on 52 model Plymouths and would pretty much guess 53 and up would have had the marrow belt..also being used..you never know what some owner may have retrofitted as he had access to a working wide belt generator.

Merle;

Sorry 'bout dat. :confused: We learn something new every day.

I have never seen any of the wide belt stuff........but it explains why Quality Power sent my new alternator with a wider pulley even though I ordered it with a 3/8" one. When I called them about it he was confused but sent out the narrower pulley next day.

Mystery solved!

My 52 truck has a DT engine but it has a later casting date on the block. It is a T342 series, a 54-56 230 engine for what I believe was a heavier truck model than a 3/4 ton. I had assumed that all the bolt on stuff had been transfered straight across when whoever had done the swap.

Hope it works OK and you all have a great time today.

The conclusion to the story...

Last weekend I finally dug out my other spare generator only to find it also has the narrow pulley. It has "1951" written on it. I believe I got it with the drive train parts from Denise Tripp after she had a Dakota drive train put into her B3C, so that would make sense. So, now I have to genny's with narrow pulleys.

Then today I happened to be passing by the shop where I took my failed generator, so I stopped in. He had it done a while ago but never called me. He said he had to replace the armature and charged me $55. That seemed pretty fair to me. So now I have my original genny back and will probably throw it back in this weekend. However, my regulator seems to have gone missing. I'm sure I left it with the genny when I dropped it off for repair, but he can't find it, and I know I don't have it anymore either, because I've looked for it. Oh well, the one I gor from Jeff works just fine. Thanks again Jeff.

I think I'll bolt up the "other" spare first to see if it works. Then I'll install my original / repaired genny. If the other spare works I'll have 2 good spares with narrow pulleys. If anyone needs one just say the word.

I've been running a narrow belt in my 1 ton since I converted it to 12v years ago-same with my 36 Plymouth.  These don't see a ton of miles, but I haven't had a belt issue.
