Plymouth switched over from 217's to 230 engines in the middle of the 1954 model year Feb 24th. How can you tell from looking at an engine if it's a 217 or a 230? I'm thinking of putting one in my P15.

depends on the production date of the engine...the transition year 1954 used both 218 and 230..the very identifier for the P25 stamped engine is the presence of a diamond emblem in the block serial number which denotes the 230..

The Plymouth Owners Club judging information for 1954 says that the last 218 engine was P25* 243000 and the first 230 engine was P25* 243001. This changeover happened at the same time that Hy-Drive transmission option was phased out and the Powerflite came in.

The engine number is Diamond P25 Star 346043 Star making it a 230. I could't read the block casting date but it says 5.7.54 on the head. If I may say so, you guys are amazing.

A-MAZING. I just hurried to the garage to look at the engine I have taken out of my P-15. It is number diamond-P25-star-300170-star so it must be a 230 rather than a 218. I have had that engine 20 years and did not know it was a 230. Thanks guys.

There is no diamond before the P25...Guess it's a 217. I went out and measured the stroke at 4-3/8".
