Question..where Is The Vin Tag Location On 50 Ply Wagon?

should be tack welded to the A post of the drivers door...round stainless embossed tag.

The ones I've seen are riveted.   Later cars (from around 1960 or so) have a rectangular VIN plate that is spot-welded to the A-pillar.

I have one that is riveted also...and one that is tack welded..should have stated that both could be used...my error..

UPDATE...went to the shop and checked..my 51and 52 are riveted....it is the 54 that is spot welded..my apologies for any confusion..however the stainless round tag on the drivers A-post stand pat for all three..

Manufacturer's serial number tag located as above, might be either side. Not a vin number. It is a number assigned by the factory as the car was being assembled. This preceded the standard VIN number that was required by Federal authorities in the mid to late 60's. Although it does uniquely identify your vehicle it does not provide the multiple levels of information that the later VIN tag does.

Update on PA's update:  As I recall, the 1950 and early 1951 Plymouths had a flat disc with the 'vehicle number' wording printed with black paint and the number itself was stamped.  Sometime in early '51, the round plate was changed to a completely embossed stainless steel disc without any painted features.  Every one I've seen has an extra hole on the disc for some reason.

Found on another old Plymouth site for 49's-50's ;)

Both my 50's have the Id plate moved to as shown in the map/dome light install for an Dome switch (hole in factory stamped  post under the factory ID plate on drivers side and  it is moved and screwed on now!, also a 2nd. hole on pass. side under a screw on plate cover for the 2nd. map /dome light switch Both side are a oblonged hole.

Best to ya,

I find it amazing that the factory would authorize the relocation of an ID plate for any reason.  That would be considered tampering today and is illegal in most (and probably all) states.

And how many other 'things' that were commonly done in the 40's and 50's would land you in jail today?  I know my calculator display doesn't have enough digits to count them all...

California impounds and destroy cars suspected of (suspected) VIN tampering even if just to remove and paint the car nad put it back...yep..is it worth the risk..your car..your call...

Guess i better part out the CA. rego'ed  50 4 dr.I own and drive as the rego is listed as the screwed on-the restored background color body #, not the frame, motor, or Orginal ID tag(screwed on) #... Oh ya, the rear frame with the org. frame

 # was cut off and replaced with a frame section from a 51 Ply. Kept the org. frame #, just in case! ;)

At current Ebay starting prices I may come out to the the good! (that really sucks!). I do not like selling on Ebay! What a PITA OVERALL FOR A NON-BUSINESS! Mopar R-10 OD's asking $3000++. I need to find a couple more!!

Interested in my 4dr. Tim??? ;)

May deliver?? :)

Best to ya,

Doug

interested in the 4 door.....if I had need for a parts car...

check on legality of vin alteration in any of the 50 states..but I will have to add that for the most part this only comes into play with cars that have real value..and when folks drop a dime or other reason that may involve inspection of the car where VIN number is part of the picture..say accident reports etc etc..
